(1) 2 0
(2) 3 0
(3) 4 0
(4) 6 0

5. 20 litres of a mixture contain milk and water in the ratio 5 : 3. If 4 litres of this mixture are replaced

(3) 13 : 25
(4) 17 : 30
Detailed Solutions

1. Let their costs be 9x and 5x.

Then, 9x – 5x = 6800 ⇒ x = 1700.
∴ Cost of a scooter = 9x = Rs.15300. Ans.(3)

2. Amount of zinc =
FG100 × 13 IJ kg = 65 kg. Ans.(4)
H 20 K

3. Let the ratio be x : (x + 40).

x 2
Then,
cx + 40h = 7 ⇔ 7x = 2x + 80 ⇔ x = 16.

∴ Required ratio is 16 : 56. Ans.(1)

4. Milk in 60 litres =
FG60 × 2IJ = 40 litres & water in it = 20 litres.
H 3K
Let x litres of water be added to it.

milk 1 40 1
Then, = ⇔ = ⇔ 20 + x = 80 ⇔ x = 60. Ans.(4)
water 2 20 + x 2
5. The remaining 16 litres of mixture contain

Milk =
FG16 × 5 IJ = 10 litres & water = 6 litres.
H 8K
Now, milk in new mix. = (10 + 4) litres & water in it = 6 litres.

14 7
∴ Ratio of milk and water in new mix. = . Ans.(3)
6 3

6. Zinc in 2 kg of new alloy =

FG 5 + 5 IJ = 105 kg.
H 13 8K 104
Copper in 2 kg of new alloy = G
F 8 + 3 IJ = 105 kg.
H 13 8K 104
105 103
Ratio of zinc and copper in new alloy = : = 105 : 103. Ans.(4)
104 104

a+b 1 a+b+a−b 1+5 a −3

7. = ⇔ = ⇔ =−
a−b 5 a+b−a+b 1−5 b 2

a2 9 a2 − b2 9 − 4 5
⇔ 2
= ⇔ 2 = = . Ans.(3)
b 4 a + b2 9 + 4 13
8. The sum of two ratios must be a factor of 64.
But, (3 + 4) = 7 is not a factor of 64.
So, this ratio can not be 3 : 4. Ans.(3)
9. For a perfect division into whole numbers, the sum of the terms of the ratio must divide 12. Since
3 + 2 = 5 does not divide 12, so it can not be 3 : 2. Ans.(3)

7 13 17 11
10. =.35 ; =.52 ; =.56 and =.73.
20 25 30 15
∴ The smallest one is .35, i.e. 7 : 20. Ans.(1)
