Valve Selection
System Specifications
The system is pumping water from one tank to another through a piping system
with a total pressure drop of 250 psi. The fluid is water at 70 ‘F. Design
(maximum) flow rate of 300 gpm, operating flow rate of 250 gpm, and a minimum
flow rate of 50 gpm. The pipe diameter is 5 inches. At 70 ‘F, water has specific
gravity of 1.0.

Allowable Pressure Drop

According to rule of thumb allowable pressure drop is 10 to 15% of the tota
pressure drop. Our total pressure is 250 Psi, so allowable pressure drop is:

10
100 × 250 = 25 Psi

Calculation For Valve Characteristic

1) For maximum flowrate

1

Cv = 300 × 25

Cv = 60

2) For operating flowrate

1

Cv = 250 × 25

Cv = 50

3) For Minimum flowrate

1

Cv = 50 × 25

Cv = 10

Preliminary Valve Selection

We are considering ball valve for this system.
Since our pipe diameter is 5 inches and value of Cv for mamximum flowrate is
found to be 60, we are selecting 2 ½ inches of the valve.

Check The Cv & Stroke Percentage

Checking stroke percentage form table:
 At maximum flowrate the stroke % lies between 75 to 80
 At operating flowrate the stroke % lies between 70 to 75
 At minimum flowrate the stroke % lies between 25 to 30

Check The Gain Across Applicable Flowrates

∆ Flow
Gain = ∆ Stroke

Now, at our three flowrates:

Qmin = 50 gpm
Qopt = 250 gpm
Qmax = 300 gpm

We have corresponding Cv values of 10, 50 & 60. The corresponding stroke

percentages are 28%, 71%, and 77% respectively.

Flow Stroke Change in Change in

(gpm) (%) flow (gpm) Stroke
(%)
50 28 250-50 = 200 71-28 = 43
250 71 300-250 = 50 77-71 = 6
300 77

Gain 1 = 200/43 = 4.65

Gain 2 = 50/6 = 8.33

(0.5)(8.33) = 4.165
8.33 – 4.65 = 3.68

Since 3.68 is less than 4.165, there should be no problem in

Controlling the valve. So for our
Case, the selected valve will do nicely.

Reasons

First of all I have selected 2 ½ inches of valve to reduce the cost.

Secondly I have selected ball valve for many reasons. Ball valves are high recovery
valves, it have low pressure drop & relatively high flow capacity. It can stand
pressure of more than 450 psi. It is low cost valve and has Low leakage and
maintenance. It is easily available in market.
