15 Hour Assessment

I did my 60 hour practicum with Coastal Carolina Athletic Digital Team, this agency

films all sports games, adds graphics and audio to the games broadcasted on ESPN+, interviews
the players and runs all of the Coastal sports teams social medias. Due to COVID-19 I was only

able to complete 10 hours for my 60 hour practicum. Since it was Spring season during these 10

hour I worked about 2 Baseball games, we would need to get their two hours early to make sure

all the equipment was working and then the games would last around 3-4 hours. When working

these games I would work with the other student workers to produce a flawless broadcast.

During both of these baseball games I worked the game cam. This camera is located on the home

plate side up in the press box. For this camera my main responsibility was to follow the ball the

whole time and zoom in to certain players when the ball goes out into the outfield. I also needed

to listen to the instructions of the person directing us. For example, they might tell us to do a fan

cam or zoom into the National Championship banner in left field. When working the camera I

think it helped me that I had background of the sport and knew what was going on during the

whole game.

When working the game camera it is very different from a normal camera you are used to

using when taking pictures. This camera is way more high tech and has a lot more features. Are

responsibility is to just move this camera left to right and, up and down. This camera also has a

small screen that projects the image being shown. Since the Baseball is very tiny it was super

hard for me to see it especially because it was being thrown at a high speed. I got yelled at a

couple times because my camera was live and I missed where the ball was going, but after a few

times I got used to it.

To overcome this problem whenever I am working Baseball or any other game it is

crucial to pay attention, if someone have trouble seeing this will probably not be the best job for

them. You don’t really know when you camera is live unless the director tells you so no matter

what you always need to be on your A game. You can also get distracted by your phone because
there are a lot of long breaks in baseball you could miss when the game starts back up if you are

just starring at your phone.

If I ever were to work a Baseball game again I would make sure to pay super close

attention and follow that ball no matter what so I dont get yelled at. I would also try to not go on

my phone as much because I did find it a bit distracting.
