Engineering Careers Research Outline

This Document is to help you know what to address in your research. It is
NOT your report!!
Field Description: identify and describe the field of engineering you chose:

As an electrical and electronics engineer, I can design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacture
components for some of the more fun (music players, digital cameras, or roller coasters) and more essential
(medical tests or communications systems) electrical equipment in our lives.

Job outlook: How many are currently employed in the U.S.? Are the number of jobs in this field of
engineering expected to increase or decrease, and by how much? What is the average expected salary?

Currently 328,100 employed in 2019. The numbers of jobs in this field are expected to increase by 3%.

The average expected salary for was $93,689 in September 16, 2020 for electrical engineers. Although the
expected salary for 0-4 years of experience is around $61,000.

Working environment: what type of setting, conditions, and geographic locations would this type of
engineer be subjected to?

Mostly work is indoors and the possibility to work outdoors if the electrical system or equipment
requires it. The occasional exposure to sounds and noise levels may be distracting or uncomfortable for
some. Work is near other with some engineers sharing the same office space, because of this they are
sometimes responsible for the health and safety of others. Work is regularly done in a group or team with
daily communication and can sometimes be held responsible for the work results of others. For work
performance, work must be sure that it is always done accurately and completely for errors can seriously
endanger people who use the designed products. They make decisions that affect other workers or the

company’s reputation on a monthly basis; they rarely consult a supervisor before deciding a course of
action. Set nearly all their daily tasks and goals without talking to a supervisor first. Meet their weekly
deadlines, depending on how strict this may make the work atmosphere somewhat competitive.

Since electrical and electronic engineers work in various industries, geographic locations of where to
subjected to can fall down to factors such as what company they get hired at or where what state do they
earn more in.

Duties & responsibilities: describe a typical day in the life of this type of engineer, including duties,
responsibilities, and common work activities.

Electronic engineers perform their duties in offices and laboratories but may also be sent to work sites
for supervising and troubleshooting. This is especially true for those who work in companies that
manufacture complex equipment. They spend about 40 hours per week at work, but they may work
longer than this for larger projects.

A typical day for an electrical engineer varies depending on their employer. Those who work for the
federal government may handle responsibilities in areas of research, development and electronic device
evaluation that may cover systems for manufacturing, transportation, aviation and communication.
Electrical engineers use design software and equipment in their projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

 Design functional electrical systems through the development and testing of components
 Research and design components for electrical equipment and systems for use in commercial,
military, or scientific industries
 Supervise the manufacturing and installation of electrical equipment, components, and
systems
 Inspect and observe facilities to evaluate the efficacy and quality of electrical systems,
components, and products
 Devise testing methods and properties to confirm the functionality of electrical components
and systems
 Develop electrical products and systems to meet customer specifications
 Research and test manufacturing and assembly processes; develop innovative processes to
improve or modify current methods
 Conduct research to collect and analyze data to create reports about ongoing projects
 Comply with local, state, and federal regulations to uphold the company’s reputation
 Communicate engineering information across teams and departments to facilitate successful
completion of large-scale projects
 Troubleshoot to solve unforeseen problems with product design or implementation
 Maintain detailed database to catalog products and component parts
 Train and supervise technicians to assist in project completion
 Expand professional and technical knowledge of leading-edge developments in electrical
engineering through participation in professional organizations, networking events, and
educational workshops
 Review industry publications to maintain a current perspective on the electrical engineering
field

Besides their typical day, Electrical Engineers also inspect completed installations and observe
operations to ensure conformance to design and equipment specifications and compliance with
operational, safety, or environmental standards. They may also direct or coordinate
manufacturing, construction, installation, maintenance, support, documentation, or testing
activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements.

Of the courses I would need to take, which do you think would be the most difficult, and why?
I would think Electric and Magnetic Fields would be most difficult because I have yet to learn anything about
the topic.
