Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION

Research Question:

How can the use of technology gradually alleviate traffic in urban areas by

influencing drivers to form better driving habits and to follow the flow of traffic?

Background Information:

Traffic congestion in urban areas happens when transportation systems can

no longer handle the number of commuters at a given time. Also, land use and

other activities surrounding the roadways along with factors such as distracted

driving, poorly timed lights, tailgating, and inconsistent deceleration all contribute

to road congestion. Theses backups primarily occur at the average times

commuters go to and leave from work.

Other problems affecting traffic jams are growing volumes of personal

vehicles, public transportation, and commercial vehicles on the roads. Old city

centers in urban areas are affected the heaviest because of decades-old road

patterns which are inadequate to support modern traffic.

Purpose of Study:

The purpose of this study is to offer a feasible option to shift driving habits

that contribute to congestion, resulting in a smoother flow of traffic. If drivers were

influenced to move at speeds consistent with the flow of traffic, traffic jams would

be naturally alleviated.
