Title: SMART Traffic Control System

Proponents: Elijah Mae D. Cabug, Vern A. Cervantes and Ray Martin Q. Tambal
School: Masbate National Comprehensive High School

Research Plan

a. Rationale

Road congestion is one of the main reasons for severe traffic in metro-cities.
Usually, traffic could cause serious issue at work and school. Many opportunities for the
day were also consumed by the traffic.

Furthermore, traffic lights used in the cities uses pre-determined timing circuits
that are not efficient in using time. The pre-determined timing activates every time which
means that the people crossing the road would still need to wait even without the traffic.

The SMART Traffic Control System is a self-deciding, traffic managing,

monitoring and analyzing robotic system. The robot could detect the number of vehicles
entering and exiting a road or street and could also decide on the crossing signs
accordingly.

The robot could also give updates on the current road congestions and provide
suggestion on alternative routes to avoid severe traffic. The updates could be via SMS or
messages through chat in social media.

b. Hypotheses

The following hypotheses will guide the researcher in answering the questions stated
below

H1 (Alternative Hypothesis)
1. The Smart Traffic Control System functions efficiently in traffic regulation and in
giving deliberate alternative route suggestions.

H0 (Null Hypothesis)
1. The Smart Traffic Control System functions inefficiently in traffic regulation and in
giving deliberate alternative route suggestions.

Research Question:

The following research questions will guide the researcher in this study:

1. Can Smart Traffic Control System be developed?

2. How effective is the Smart Traffic Control System in regulating congestion of vehicles
on intersections?

3. Can the Smart Traffic Control System give measured suggestions of alternative routes
to drivers through text messages?

Engineering Goals:
The purpose of this study is to develop a traffic control system that could
deliberately decide on managing the road traffic based on the data gathered, monitored
and analyzed. A system that could also send updates and propose suggestion in avoiding
road congestion.

Expected Outcomes:
After the study was conducted, the robot is expected to be significant in
preventing severe traffic most especially in metro-cities. The success of this research will
benefit the community in improving the way of life of the people in the community.

c. Research Methods and Conclusion

Procedure

The (SMART Traffic Control System) will be activated by plugging it to the main
power supply. The user must send a message specifically to what street the client wants
to know the street’s nearby traffic congestion through SMS or Facebook message. The
robot will then reply with an accurate data on where the traffic is building up and the
suggested alternative routes.

Risk and Safety

The researchers will properly execute the procedures with proper equipment.
Since the research will involve soldering and will be dealing with electricity, the
researchers will be very careful in the process.

Data Analysis

The researchers will repeatedly perform the function of the device, the model will
be tested with different probable events.

The number of toy cars and the level of congestion will be controlled by the
researchers to test the accuracy of the robot in analyzing and managing the traffic.

The data gathered will be noted for the performance of the SMART Traffic
Control System in terms of accuracy of the information generated
