MDBFP-2C FAILURE REPORT ~ SCCL SINGARENI 2X600 MW
Date: 17-03-2017
'n continuation to MOM dated 16-03-2017, BHEL Hyderabad representative present at site studied
‘rend charts and SOE data of MDBFP-2C on 17-03-2017. Following are the observations and conclusions
of BHEL Hyderabad.
Observation:
* MDBFP-2C scoop increased manually and maintained at 82.81% (Between 11:0:
When Unit load was 73 MW.
+ FDV-14 valve was closed manually, When Drum level was in negative side (-286mm).
* Due to closure of FDV-14 at same scoop position (82.81%), BFP Flow reduced and discharge
Pressure increased to 261 kg/cm2 (at speed 5600 RPM).
* BFP thrust bearing temperature ralsed above tripping value (105 degC) at Hrs 11:10:19 but did
ot trip as per recommended protections. Thrust bearing temperature further increased and
reached 209 degC,
* BFP was in operation till Hrs 12:20:03 without tripping due to Thrust bearing High temperature,
= 11:11:19),
Root cause of failu
* tis seen that due to mal-operation (Refer to the attached trend chart the FDV-14 was manually
closed) resulting in flow restriction & Discharge pressure risen to 261 Ke/Sa,Cm (design
Pressure at full load was around 215 ksc) which put load on the thrust bearing, the BFP Thrust.
bearing metal temperature rose above tripping value. During this operation, drum level was in
‘negative side (-286mm) and MOBFP scoop was high i.e. 82.81% (Manually).
* MDBFP was not stopped as per recommended protections and continued to run with this
Condition for 10 minutes, resulting the damage of thrust bearing and other internals,
Hence, BHEL/HYD concludes that failure of MDBFP is an operation mistake by customer.
