5: Report of Student Achievement

Graduate Level: demonstrate understanding of a range of strategies for reporting to students and parents/carers
and the purpose of keeping accurate and reliable records of student achievement.

Interviews
The Teacher-Parent/Carer Interview
This type of interview provides an opportunity for parents and carers to be involved in the assessment process in
general, as well as being able to outline areas for remediation and to provide suggestions for possible improvements.
The interviews allow for details about student achievement and progress to be shared and works towards developing a
positive connection between school and home learning environments.
The Teacher-Student Interview
These interviews will typically occur more frequently than interviews with parents/carers, and can be useful for
developing an insight into an individual student’s progress with their learning. The interview allows for information to be
shared, and provides the teacher with an opportunity to ask a question to the students to prompt self-reflection and
provide insight into their ideas and thinking.
The Teacher-Student-Parent Interview
Also commonly referred to as ‘three-way reporting’, this type of interview aims to improve communication between
parents, teacher and students, while providing opportunities for students to share evidence of their achievements.

Portfolios
A portfolio is typically a collection of student work that has been gathered over a period of time that shows evidence of
learning or achievement.
Valencia and Place (1994), constructed labels for the various types of portfolios:
 The showcase portfolio that contains the best work of a student
 The evaluation portfolio that includes specific and marked work
 The documentation portfolio that includes student work that is systematically kept by the teacher but not
marked
 The process portfolio that contains ongoing work and student self-reflection
Portfolios are a good supporting document for teacher-parent interviews, as they provide examples and evidence of
achievement.
Reports
Individual student reports provide parents and carers comprehensive information in relation to a student’s
achievement, progress, attitude and commitment to their learning, strengths, and strategies that could be used to
support and extend future learning.

School-Wide Reporting
School-wide reporting strategies are typically more informal than the other strategies that have been mentioned. These
strategies can be used to report on and celebrate the achievements of students both individually and collectively. There
are various strategies, these can include; brochures, newsletters, assemblies and classroom displays. These also promote
levels of accountability and transparency between schools and other relevant stakeholders.

The Purpose of Records

The purpose of reporting is to ultimately enhance an individual student’s learning and achievement. Teachers must
employ a range of effective reporting strategies including both formal and informal methods, these should be recorded and
be easy to access and manageable for ease of sharing and communication with students, parents, caregivers and relevant
stakeholders. Records of teacher judgements support holistic assessments that can be made about a student’s progress with
their learning.
