COMPARE THE GRIEVANCES WITH THE PEACE TREATY OF SZATMÁR

With the Peace Treaty of Karlóca in 1699, the grievances of the Hungarian society
started. It was set up because it was signed without the Hungarians’ appearance. First the
Habsburgs established the Commission of Neoacquisition. This was aimed at the landowners,
since all lands became ownerless. They had to prove their right of ownership of their estate
and also had to pay taxes as war indemnity tax. The landowners weren’t involved in the
government, soldiers were dismissed from the border fortresses, instead foreign mercenaries
came. The peasants gave new free services and the religious toleration was over: many
German Catholic settlers were invited to the country. This was the beginning of the Habsburg
influence all over Hungary. Revolts happened after revolts for instance the 1697 uprising in
Hegyalja.
However, the Peace Treaty of Szatmár changed several things. The Hungarians signet
it with the Habsburgs in 1711. With this, the Commission of Neoacquisition was dissolved,
which meant the landowners regained their lands. The privileges of nobility returned, they
finally had the right to choose a palatine and to have a diet. Also, foreigners were removed
from the Hungarian offices, religious toleration was back.
These were such favorable conditions for the Hungarians however, the Habsburgs
could stop the people’s resistance and thus they secured the support of the Hungarian nobility.
