1. Pre-Reading
a. -Who’s the author? (Short biography)
- Born Lois Ann Hammersberg on March 20, 1937, in Honolulu, Hawái, Lowry is one of
America's most popular and versatile children's book authors. She has written in a variety of
fictional forms, from the WWII tale Number the Stars to the lighthearted adventures of
Anastasia Krupnik to the fantastical The Giver.
A shy and introverted child, Lowry loved to read. She was around 8 or 9 years old when she
decided she wanted to be a writer. Her father was a dentist and Army officer, which led to her to
live in several different places growing up. Lowry spent some of her school years in Japan, but
she ended up graduating from a New York City high school. She then spent two years at Brown
University before dropping out to get married.
Jonas is an eleven-year-old boy who is very apprehensive one day he leaves his house and
observes that there is a jet flying over him, these jets were used to bring the load of food for the
whole community at that moment they say that everyone should enter his house because the jet is
very close but everything turns out to be a mistake, Jonas felt strange because in December he
was going to turn twelve.
In the community everyone is very respectful and careful with their language but what seems
strange to Jonas is that his friend Asher is made fun of because he talks too fast and it is difficult
for people to understand him but the rest is fine, they are all very polite Everyone in Jonas's
family has a tradition that is, let's say, tell what they do that day and share their problems to find
out how they can help.
When they start to have dinner, Lily starts talking about what she does not like and is not
satisfied, she says that she is upset with some visitors of seven or seven years because they did
not comply with the rules as they were set, her father tells her that maybe those of Seven of us
understood them and that is why they are not following them and Lily calms down because she
knows that that is surely what happened.
His father said that he had had a baby today and that he was sad because his illness kept getting
worse that he thought he would bring him home to take care of him and give him more attention,
Jonas's mother says that he had dealt with a client because he did not follow the rules And now it
was up to Jonas to tell about his problems, he did not want to but if he did not he would be
breaking the rules so he decides to tell them he tells them that he feels apprehensive (it means
that he is afraid of catching something) about the ceremony that they are going to do. for twelve,
jonas's parents send lily to another place so they can talk in private to be more calm.
