Poetic Devices

In our last class we covered a popular poem by Robert Frost. One of the reasons why this
piece has gained such renown or popularity is because it makes such good use of a number
of poetic devices. As we move on with the English B, we need to understand these devices
before we ourselves can become good writers.

Research and make short notes on/ give the definition of the following, state examples:

1. Poetic devices
2. Alliteration
3. Assonance
4. Imagery
5. Metaphor
6. Onomatopoeia
7. Personification
8. Refrain
9. Rhyme
10. Simile
11. Stanzas
12. Word Play
13. Repetition
14. Rhythm
15. Couplets

Review the poem ‘Fire and Ice’ once more and list all the poetic devices you can find and
the part of the poem you can find them.

‘Some say the world will end in fire,

Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
