Directions: After you have read the poem, answer the following questions and
write it inside the box below.
Questions:
Since the general theme of the poem is about how to face death with dignity
and ferocity, the author used metaphor of death. In the first line the author used the
word night as a metaphoric symbol of death. The phrases "close of day" and "dying
of the light" has a similar meaning that describe the death. I believe these devices
gave us an idea that the night represent the end of life and the day is the life span of
one person. In the second stanza the author uses he phrases “dark is right: and
“good night”. in a literal meaning these two phrases represent the end of the day
where the darkness appears after the sun set and we often say good night before
resting to sleep. Obviously the author in the second stanza uses dark good night as
a metaphoric symbol of death.
3. What poetic device occurs more in the poem?
I have read your poem about "Do not Go Gentle into That Good Night" I am
writing you a letter to express my reaction about your view of death. I understand
that you want to emphasize that different people have different views about death
but one thing I really agree about is the perspective that death should be faced
with dignity and ferocity, Your lines are very remarkable and from these lines we
can learn a lot about life and death. One of the lines that really mark on my mind
is the line "not go gentle into that good night" and "rage against the dying of the
light," that explain that death cannot be avoided, but it can be challenged. With
your poem I learn that time will come that we will all going to face death, but we
should not fear this moment instead we should accept death passively.
Respectfully yours

5. If you were the father, what would you tell the speaker? Make a response to
the son. Write a letter to Dylan Thomas, explaining your reaction to the view
of death expressed in the poem
To my dearest son,
I know that when the time you read this letter I may no longer in this world,
First of all i would like to say thank you for giving me chance to understand the
agony I have inside. I know that being in this situation fear is inevitable. However,
the light you shared to me through your words open my heart to accept that life is
wonderful even on my death bed. I clearly understand that the best way is to face
death with strength and power, like the "wild" heroes of old. To embrace the fiery
energy of life one last time, and in many ways, serves as a small way to triumph
something I have no control over in the end. I am happy now, I may no longer be
physically present when I die but I know with our memories you will forever
treasure in your heart. And when time comes that it will be your turn to face this
fate we all going to face, I want you to use your poems to remind yourself that in
heaven I am standing waiting with my arms wide open to an everlasting reunion.
