CO1: Determine characteristics of electronic materials in terms of microstructure and quantum

mechanics. [PO1]
1. a) Draw the crystal plane of a cubic unit cell holding Miller Indices (0 2 1). [01]
b) Estimate atomic packing factor of a cubic unit cell for Pt atom. [01]
c) Si plate of a solar cell offers 2X eV work function. What will be the maximum wavelength [01]
of sunlight photon to exist photo-electron? Assume ‘X’ is the last two digits of your student
ID.
d) If an electron travelling at a velocity of 107 cm/sec, calculate the de Broglie wavelength of [01]
the electron.
e) If Ef = Ec – 0.5 eV and E = Ec + kT/2, then determine Fermi-Dirac probability function, [01]
fF(E) of filled quantum state by an electron of energy E at room temperature.

2. ‘B’ has the FCC crystal structure and a density of ‘X’ g/cm3 and an atomic mass of 196.97 [2+2+1]
g/mol. Analyze the microstructure of cubic unit cell of ‘B’ and hence quantitatively
determine the following.

a. The atomic concentration?

b. The lattice parameter
c. The atomic radius
3. An electron is bound in a one-dimensional infinite potential well with a width of [3+2]
10 Å. Analyze the particle motion in terms of Schrodinger wave equation and estimate the
following.

a. The first two energy levels that the electron may occupy.
b. The wavelength of photon that might be emitted when the electron drops from the
second to the first energy level.

4. a For a free electron, calculate the density of quantum states per volume [2.5]
over the energy range of 0 ≤ E ≤ X eV. Assume ‘X’ is the last two digits of your student ID.

b Determine the number of quantum states per cm3 in Si between Ev and Ev - kT at T = 400 K. [2.5]

CO2: Assess materials for appropriate applications in electrical and electronic devices.
[PO2]

5. A photoelectric experiment indicates that violet light of wavelength 420 nm is the longest [3+3+4]
wavelength radiation that can cause the photoemission of electrons from a particular multi-
alkali photocathode surface.

a. Select the photocathode material with proper work function.

b. If a UV radiation of wavelength ‘X’ nm is incident upon the photocathode surface,

evaluate maximum kinetic energy of the photoemitted electrons, in eV? Assume ‘X’ is
the last two digits of your student ID.

c. Given that the UV light of wavelength ‘X’ nm has an intensity of 20 mW. cm2, if the
emitted electrons are collected by applying a positive bias to the opposite electrode,
evaluate the existence of photoelectric current density in mA/cm2.
