2. ‘B’ has the FCC crystal structure and a density of ‘X’ g/cm3 and an atomic mass of 196.97 [2+2+1]
g/mol. Analyze the microstructure of cubic unit cell of ‘B’ and hence quantitatively
determine the following.
a. The first two energy levels that the electron may occupy.
b. The wavelength of photon that might be emitted when the electron drops from the
second to the first energy level.
4. a For a free electron, calculate the density of quantum states per volume [2.5]
over the energy range of 0 ≤ E ≤ X eV. Assume ‘X’ is the last two digits of your student ID.
b Determine the number of quantum states per cm3 in Si between Ev and Ev - kT at T = 400 K. [2.5]
CO2: Assess materials for appropriate applications in electrical and electronic devices.

5. A photoelectric experiment indicates that violet light of wavelength 420 nm is the longest [3+3+4]
wavelength radiation that can cause the photoemission of electrons from a particular multi-
alkali photocathode surface.
c. Given that the UV light of wavelength ‘X’ nm has an intensity of 20 mW. cm2, if the
emitted electrons are collected by applying a positive bias to the opposite electrode,
evaluate the existence of photoelectric current density in mA/cm2.
