tended to run in reverse speed which is the reason to trip the breaker and the engine, in
other words it's the same thing differential protection circuit coming in to the picture.
The alternator needs to be overhauled to enhance its performance, and then further checks
could be done on Synpole D control system.

Vessel attended: 0300 hrs. from Houston 0300(08112/2020) 840 miles travel.

In my last visit I had concluded that there is no problem in electrical control circuit and
hence the engine FO goveming system should be checked for the voltage is dropping
drastically initiating the trip signal at Synpol D power management system. Ship staff
checked the FO valves and confirmed the FO goveming system is working fine, they
even swapped the govemors but the problem remained the same.
The first thing I did on arrival was to create a black out and disabled the tripping circuit
for the Engine and the breaker (I have shown these disabled points to the ship's staff and
they are well conversant with it)
Locked no. I and no. 2 generators and created black out to just put only No.3 generator on
load. As soon as the generator came on load the voltage dropped to less than 300V and
the breaker tripped on UVT. Other stand by generator came on load and restored the
power.
Replaced the AVR on no.3 and restarted the generator and put parallel with other
generator on the BUS, the generator came on load and started sharing the load also but as
soon as the one of the two (no.1 and no2) generator was removed from the line, No.3 also
tripped.
Suspected the excitation circuit and checked each and everycomponent on No.3 generator
excitation circuit. Confirmed the operation of the AVR (replaced with new),
Transformers Rectifier trs.T6, Measuring cir trans. T7, T8. Also checked the resistors R2
resistors which are connected in series with the interm. Trans T4,T5. Also checked the
output from the AVR while the generator was running on o load and compared with other
two generators. Please see below table for AVR outputs on no load running.

At 17, 18, 19 27 25.t 27
Output DC at 1,5 7.3 7.0 7.2
Above table shows the AVR function on No load is working properly in the same manner
for all three generators. The function of the resistor R1 was also checked and confirmed
the same value of all three generators.
The rectifier V1 and V2 were checked for the connection and the functions and
confirmed if they are in good condition by the ohm meter.
All other connections on all the components were cleaned properly and put back. Also,
the zener diode (U) in paqallel with V2 checked for and found to be in good condition.
We kept it isolated from the circuit to make sure its not bleeding excitation voltage
because generator trips only as soon as it comes on load.
To check and make sure that the generator engine, F.O system and excitation circuit is all
ok, disabled the engine and breaker trips and paralleled the generator with the network
and it came on load and started sharing though the trip signal initiated still. Anyway, we
checked all the parameters are ok and generator is running safe, we took full load on this
no.3 generator about
415 KW, which showed that the generator itself and its excitation circuits are ok since the
generator is maintain the voltage and frequency and is on load at 415KW.
Now the question remain unsolved, why the trip circuit is initiating with the alarm
differential protection alarm.
Getting back to the square one, we have already replaced the cards on synpole D CMA
133 forthe CTs T1, T2,T3 (U2,Y2,W2) and CMA 13l for the CTs T1,T2,T3
(Ul,Vl,Wl) which were working fine on the no.1 generator.
The last thing , I wanted to compare the values of all the CTs on all three generators
thinking that may be the CTs itself creating high differential for their unmatched ohmic
values, but the highest difference was found on no.2 generator which is the best working
generator on the network. Please see the table below for the values:

The conclusion is that the ohmic values of all three generators are almost same on CMA
131 except highlighted in red on no.3 generator @ 3-4 input. Yet No.1 generator has
same values but working fine and no.2 generator has big difference and working even
better that No.l but No.3 generator has neither big difference nor almost same so why it
should create the differential protc. Signal.
My report needed to be fqrwarded to the makers and the answer to be sought.
At this juncture I cannot suggest any parts replacement since everything seems to be
working fine. Generator is all working fine, taking good load, running alone with full
load but the trip signal is always present, why this signal should be there and where its
originating from and this signal is not permanently existing, as I have explained above
that after replacing the AVR, the generator did not have any differential protc. Alarm but
when other generator was put off load, this no.3 also tripped when the trip signal was not
disabled.
Disabling the trip signal to the breaker and the Engine which are simultaneously created,
the generator runs fine and takes the load as other generator do.
Vessel is coming to Houston shortly and hopefully we will have the answer/guidance for
above from the makers.
