INTRODUCTION

Music is an all-pervading entity. Found in even the far-reaches of history, its influence is
found in all cultures and societies. It has leapt across the barriers of language and unites
people from varying cultural backgrounds. Plato once said that, “Music gives a soul to the
universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” This has been
time and again proved in every aspect of our lives.

From the first lullaby sung to us as a baby, music provides the “soundtrack” of our lives.
And this sound-track quite literally heals us. By bestowing great benefits in social, mental,
physical and various other aspects, it is a bulwark protecting us from harm and healing us
when harm does reach us. This is aptly put by Billy Joel who says, “I think music in itself is
healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No
matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.”

AIM

The aim of this paper is to explore the colossal role music plays as a healer.

OBJECTIVES

Our objective is to analyse and observe the role of music in the mental avenue through
various researches conducted by various institutions .It will show the multiple uses and
successes it has proved to be in studies conducted. Music can create a positive and profound
effect on the emotional well-being.

Another objective is also to study its physical aspects of our life .Exercise and rest coupled
with music helping patients to recover is an example .With more examples like its effect of
relief from fatigue and joint pain, we will reassert its ubiquity.

Its role in enhancing the social responsibility among the people is also a main topic of
discussion in our paper .Whether to ameliorate the health of a depressed being or play a
crucial role in societal changes, music practices cannot be separated from the environment in
which it exists.

Even unity and past freedom struggles of various sects and societies have a huge influence
from music. It amps up the spirit of the people as witnessed from the effects of various songs.
METHODOLOGY
Doctrinal method has been used by the researchers in their research with extensive use of
materials and literary sources. Research analysis was completed mainly using substances
from secondary sources. The researcher has also put down enormous effort has been put
down by the research for the understanding of subject related terms and concepts with the
result of enrichment of the study to a great extent. The researchers were bound to direct
materials extraction from certain authors’ literary work in some cases for which they had full
intention to cite abundantly and to notify during the due course of time. The present study is
the descriptive and analytical research. It has focused on qualitative methods of research.
Secondary and published documented data has been collected through various sources and
analyzed accordingly. Various documents have been collected through different websites, and
different books have been analyzed accordingly, so as to reach a particular conclusion.

HISTORY OF THE ORIGIN OF MUSIC

It is very hard to determine the source of music itself because it is probable that we may start
to sing and clap or beat the hands on separate surfaces, for which there is no archaeological
record, of course. Ancient beings, however, witnessed a sort of ' cultural explosion ' 1 between
at least 60,000 and 30,000 years ago – they began to create art in the form of paintings on
cave walls, jewellery and decorations, and to bury their dead ceremonially.

Evolutionary researchers think that music culture would have helped pre-historic human
species survive as the music coordinates feelings, helps communicate significant messages,
motivates people to identify with a community, and motivates people to help other group
members.

Music and medicine have been closely related for centuries. The Greek’s use of music and
medicaments in conjunction with oracular utterances was an early foray into the field of
psychosomatic medicine. Pythagoras believed that if one use music in a prescribed manner
then it will make a contribution towards one’s health. “Psychocatharsis”—purifying the
emotions through music—was recognized and used by Aristotle. In Renaissance period the

accounts of music on breathing, blood pressure, muscular activity, and digestion was found
out.

“With my three fellow musicians, dressed in the oddest way…completely tattered…despite

the snow underfoot…that I played my quartet…the most diverse classes of society were
mingled: farmers, factory workers, intellectuals, professional servicemen, doctors and
priest2”, so remembered the French composer Oliver Messiaen from his gruelling days at a
prisoner-of-war camp during World War 2. Even in such despair he found music as relief and
antidote. He found a meaning in life through it. He coped and overcame through music. As
do millions of people in any given situation in any given part of the world an objective out of
paper is to cement music as a pillar for coping through examples.

OLDEST MUSICAL INSTRUMENT

It is thought that the oldest musical instrument ever found is the Divje Babe flute, which was
found in 1995 in a cave in Slovenia, although this was contested. The product is a fragment
of a cave bear's femur, dated at the age of 60,000-43,000, pierced with spaced holes.
Scientists who were unable to recognize the chance of Neanderthals playing music dismissed
the assertion, saying that the perfectly spaced and neatly sculpted holes were actually the
consequence of an animal chewing the bone fragment. However, as the perspective of the
Neanderthals from subhuman brutes to more advanced beings is changing, there has been a
general agreement that the Divje Babe flute is actually a musical instrument.

Another finding was created in 2008–a 43,000-year-old bone flute in the Hohle Felscave
close Ulm in Germany. The five-holed flute is made of a vulture wing bone and has a V-
shaped mouthpiece. It was one of several comparable tools discovered in the region, with
others produced from mammoth ivory dating back to 35,000 years ago. It would have been
particularly difficult to create the mammoth-ivory flutes. The flute maker would have had to
divide a section of curved ivory along its natural grain using only stone tools. Then the two
halves were hollowed out, carved and fitted with an airtight seal.

The cave in southern Germany includes early proof of Homo sapiens ' occupation of Europe
and, on announcing the discovery, researchers proposed that the "finds show the existence of
a well-established musical tradition when modern humans colonized Europe 3." They

proposed that music may have helped keep bonds between bigger human communities, and
that this may have helped the species grow both in numbers and in geographic scope.

Those who dismissed the Divje Babe flute finding stated that music played a part in
maintaining bigger social networks that could have given the advantage over the
Neanderthals to modern humans. Looking at the pictures of the Dibje Babe flute dating back
to the Neanderthal era, however, it seems quite absurd to believe that it was produced by
carnivorous tooth holes.

MUSIC AND ITS CRUCIAL ROLE IN BRINGING SOCIETAL CHANGES

Society and Music are in every case characteristically related. Music elucidates about social
conditions including the components that either encourage or block social change. Music is
an exceptionally incredible medium since it encourages communication which goes beyond
belief and enables significance to be shared, and cultivates the advancement and support of
individual, gathering, social and national personalities. It can initiate numerous reactions, for
example, physiological, development of state of mind, feelings, cognition and behavioural
reiteration at a personal level. However, the numerous processing of music which our mind
does, can make it hard to anticipate the definite meaning or thought it is attempting to pass
on.

Music is a staggeringly powerful medium which effectively affects people, their

psychological states, and their conditions of cognizance. Thus, it has a great deal of role in
social collaborations, including different customs, rituals, religious services, and even war.
Pretty much every culture on the planet appears to have music.

If one is interested in studying how music affects our lives and society, this will require a
multi-disciplinary way to deal with and assess the numerous components which might be
significant. These may incorporate the general public or culture to which the individual is
associated, sub-group participation, singular attributes including sexual orientation, age,
related involvements of music, current state of mind, regardless of whether the music is self-
chosen or other chosen and the degree to which music is viewed as significant in a general
public. To investigate these issues a wide scope of techniques should be assessed which are
equipped for investigating the general public's emotional encounters of music and on the
other hand assessing those reactions of which we are unconscious.
There is additionally a requirement for progressive and precise examination of the manners in
which music can affect the gatherings of individuals in social settings. This will take a three
dimensional approach to look into commercial environment and workplaces. The manner in
which music may influence conduct in open spots has to be observed. Such inquiry, for
example, may investigate whether specific sorts of music may animate systematic ways out
of enormous public gatherings, decrease the frequency of disorder in specific settings,
increase resilience when individuals need to line up for significant amount of time or induce
sentiments of prosperity and wellbeing in public gatherings.

The part of network has been so profoundly entwined with music, that it is hard to state
whether it is music that influences society or if society is reflected in the music that it plays.

Folk music is, naturally, music played and sung by and for regular individuals—music for the
general population. Naturally, when a culture ends up radical changes that assessment gives
route through articulation. People artist and lyricist Woody Guthrie started stating "challenge
music" and tunes on the side of famous developments of the day. Other people artists, for
example, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez went with the same pattern.

Just because, music was a vehicle for articulation, yet it was likewise an approach to prepare
and move audience members to think distinctively and make a new movement. The music
normally exemplifies idealistic thinking. Individuals in the US, especially the adolescents,
had demonstrated an assortment of great reactions to this type of music. Moving from the
clear-cut prominent picture of the 1950's, there was a general pattern toward opportunity,
singularity and articulation.

Music helps in joining individuals and uniting them for cultural changes. Music, through its
impact changes the attitude of the individuals all around the globe and urges them to show a
drive for acquiring a turnaround the general public. For instance, when there is a fear based
oppressor assault or some contention assault on the military of a specific nation, the nation
based love tunes starts a unitary inclination among the natives. There comes a solidarity
among the sentiments of the individuals everywhere throughout the nation. They ask for
equity for the saints and vengeance from the ones who realized such conditions. This is the
means by which music helps in joining individuals and causes them to endeavour to realize
changes and cause globalization.

Since, music influences passionate sentiments and communication of a people, it encourages

solidarity among social gatherings who have a shared objective. Such gatherings, at that
point, endeavour to globalize the world. Music conveys positive message for the people
which urges them to form gatherings and change the contemporary era.

MUSIC IN UNITY AND FREEDOM

According to United Nations Secretary General Kofi-Annan, “In a world of diversity where
often values clash, music leaps across language barriers and unites people of quite different
cultural backgrounds. And so, through music, all peoples can come together to make the
world a more harmonious place”. A study proves that songs even in different languages
enhances unity among individuals. People from different parts of the world sometimes listen
to music and likes them regardless of the language in which it is sung. They enjoy the tune of
the song. They can even dance on the beats of the music even if they don’t know its meaning.
For instance, in our university campus on the fresher’s night both Tamil and Hindi music
were played. The students didn’t stopped dancing if the language was not their language. This
was because they were all enjoying the music. They were all dancing together irrespective of
the north south divide and the linguistic barrier. That means they were in united. They all
knew that the night was to enjoy and everyone present there was happy. If a person keeps
listening to the music from time to time then the music continuously encourages the person.
Music has a power to control the mind. People first listen to music due to its tune and if the
tune suits their ears then they start comprehending the meaning of the music. When they start
to comprehend the music then they feel the music. They start connecting their selves with the
words of the lyrics.

There are various themes of music and each one of them unites people in its own ways, such
as there are patriotic songs, sad songs, songs for the family, songs for love and songs for
friendship etc.

(A) Songs of the revolutions- The patriotic songs influence mass of people. They encourage
people to work for a common cause i.e. the good of the country and its people. Music played
a very important role in uniting people for the Indian freedom struggle. It is now also helping
people to remind of their duties and their responsibilities to get freedom from the social evils.
Then they start feeling their responsibilities and duties. These songs unites people from
different parts of life to try to throw out the social evils of the society and gain freedom from
the wrong. The people know that freedom can’t be gained by one person alone. In the words
of Hellen Keller “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”. So, the like minded
people of the society form associations. These associations show the enemies that they are
united, which creates a sense of fear in the minds of enemies.

This can be explained with the help of various examples:-

(i) India- The song “Naina Ashq Na Ho” composed for a scene in which the soldiers of the
Indian Army board on a train to go to join their duty in the film Holiday- A soldier is never
off Duty. This song played an important role in taking revenge of the Pulwama terrorist
attack which happened on 14th February 2019. The song was continuously played on the
television sets especially on the news channel to remind the people of the incident. The
people then became so enraged that they started gathering on public places like the railway
stations to take revenge that the government had to launch an airstrike on the terrorist
quarters in Pakistan. Then, when Pakistan moved its fighter plane over the Indian airspace
our wing commander Abhinandan landed in Pakistan occupied Kashmir while destroying the
plane. Once, again the song played its role. It once again enraged people and the govt. The
effect was that Pakistan had to release the wing commander within one-and-a-half day. This
shows how music unites and what it can lead to.

(ii) French Revolution- The songs like “La Marseillaise, Chant du départ, Carmagnole, Ah!
ça ira, ça ira, ça ira (1790), Allons Français au Champs de Mars (1790), L'aristocratie en
déroute (1790), Aux bons citoyens (1790), Le bonnet de la liberté” played an important role
in uniting people during the French Revolution.

(iii) China- Music played a very important role in the Cultural Revolution. The songs like
“Nanniwan”, "Osmanthus Flowers Blooming Everywhere in August" and “The Sky Above
the Liberated Zone” played an important role in uniting people for the Maoist and wartime in
China.

(iv) American Revolution- "Dying Redcoat", "Free America", "Poor Old Tory", and
"Jefferson and Liberty” were the songs which played an important role in uniting people in
the American Revolution.

(v) 1971 Bangladesh War- The song “Amar Sonar Bangla”. This song was composed to
create a sense of unified Bengal among the people. This song built the unity so strongly that
the song was adopted as the national anthem of Bangladesh.
(B) Songs for the family- Some songs are made for the family. These songs fill love in the
minds of individuals towards the other members of the family. These songs take you in the
beautiful memories of the past. They make you feel your connection with your family. They
make you feel emotional. Then you want to spend some time with your family remembering
the beautiful memories of the past. In this way music makes you and your family united. Ex-
The song “Ek doosre se karte hai pyaar hum ek doosre ke vaaste marna pade to hain tayaar
hum” in the Hindi movie “Hum”. It makes you feel that you are alone, your family is with
you and you feel united.

(C) Songs for friendship- This also works in a similar manner as the songs for the family
work. They fill love in the minds of individuals for their friends. They remind you of some
good moments of friendship. The good and bad days that you spent together were for
fighting for the difficulties faced by both. For ex- the song “ye dosti hum nhi todenge…
todenge dum agar tera saath na chodenge”. This song makes you feel emotional and unites
you and your friends.

MUSIC AND ITS EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL BENEFITS

Music listening has been recommended to constructively impact health via stress reducing
effects. Stress is a dreadful element which has great impact on our lives. Stress which we get
out of daily chores is inevitable, so to get rid of both physical and mental stress, the present
generation often consults doctor but it is not necessary when we listen to music in a daily
basis. Music has tremendous power to reduce our stress and keep us mentally and physically
sound and it can be accessed by all and an easy stress reducing element. Music can affect the
body in many health promoting ways, which is the basis for a rising field known as music
therapy. However, you can use music in your day-to-day life and attain many stress relief
aids on your own.

EMOTIONAL BENEFITS
The various kinds of music have distinct possessions on our health, faster music can make
you feel more alert and focus better. Upbeat music can make you sense more optimistic and
positive and a slower tempo can relax your mind and body. The best stress reducers are
Native American, Celtic, Indian stringed instruments, drums, flutes and sounds of nature
[rain, thunder].

The effects of music on our health is enormous and it plays a vital role in helping a human
being become happier and its inevitable effects are it uplifts the mood of a person, as we all
know that anxiety is most common and most upsetting of all mental conditions and it has
become an epidemic in modern day civilization and this can be suppressed by listening to
music. The present era is full of workaholic intellectuals as concentration is must to survive
in this competitive era and this can be boosted by music. If music was a drug then it might
have ruled the medi-industry, it has colossal power to enhance the immune system. Music is a
great reliever of both physical and emotional pain. The teenagers are often fall as a victim to
depression due to various factors and science has proved that attending music therapy classes
is a great way to get rid of depression.

Life is full of ups and downs and its often we are in a dilemma that are we in touch with our
emotions, many of us feel happy or sad without any proper reasons, this detachment will have
a great negative impact in our life and music helps us to tune into our emotions. If your
sleeping pattern is messed up you are not getting enough sleep, which makes you feel
stressed however listening to music could provide you with the answers.

To have a crystal-clear view about the effects of music in our mental health, we have referred
to various researches conducted by renowned institutes; some of the researches will have an
intense effect in our future if we follow it:

1. Research from Mc Gill University 2011 [ CANADA]:

Music increases the amount of dopamine [a mood enhancing chemical] produced
in brain, it is the best suppressor of depression.

2. Dr. Catherine Meads Brunel University UK survey:

By examining 72 random trials including more than 7,000 patients who received
surgery, researchers found those who were played music after their process reported
feeling less pain and anxiety compared to those who did not.

3. March 2014 Research Denmark:

Music will be advantageous for patients with fibromyalgia [ a disorder that
causes muscle and joint pain and fatigue], listening to calm music reduced pain and
increased movement among 22 patients with that disorder.

4. Dr. Daniel Levitin, Mc Gill University 2013:

People experienced less pleasure from listening to their favorite song when given
Naltrexone – a drug that blocks opioid signals, suggesting music induces the release
of opioid to ease pain.

5. Study from University of Helsinki 2008 [Finland]:

This research found that stroke patients who listened to music for around 2 hours
everyday had better vocal memory and attention and enhanced language ability for the
persons who developed communication difficulties after stroke.

6. Memory and Cognition Journal Survey 2013:

They enrolled 60 adults who were learning Hungarian and randomized to one of
the three learning tasks: speaking unfamiliar phrases and same phrases in rhythmic
fashion or by singing. When asked to recall the adults who learnt through singing had
much recollecting precision so music can be used as a remedy for Alzheimer disease.

PHYSICAL BENEFITS
“Music is not mystical but it is mysterious”, Dr. Gaston considered to be the father of Music
Therapy quotes from Music in Therapy. This mysterious quality of music confers many
benefits which are of physical nature. Some of these physical benefits come under the
important matters such as exercise, pain-relief, sleep and palliative care.

1. MUSIC AND EXERCISE

Googling ‘upbeat music for exercise’ brings 36, 30,000 results. It may not be impressive
considering the success of the search engine but then it does clearly shows that people use it
extensively as aid for keeping up with strenuous physical activities. This use of music is also
highlighted in the widespread outcry that arose when headphones and other portable music
players were banned in USA Track & Field (USATF) in the year of 2007. This ban was
imposed to remove the competitive edge that listening to music apparently conferred to
the runners.

Even if there is no conclusive research to show that music enhances an athlete’s

performance, it is widely accepted that music does make exercise more enjoyable. This
can be easily verified if one ventures into a gym to see that either music is played out
loud by speakers or that the patrons are listening to it privately to make their experiences
more palatable and ease the fatigue that follows from a workout.

An “auditory bubble” is often created while walking or travelling while in the activity of
listening to music which people utilise for isolation of themselves from stimuli that are
unpleasant from the surrounding environment to make it pleasurable. This bubble aids in
easing the mind with stress-relief and provides relative privacy for people to enjoy their
activities.

It has also been observed that basketball players who underperformed due to pressure did
better when they listened to songs like “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” by Monty
Python. The song jubilantly urges us to always look on the bright side of life and this
optimism and upbeat feeling it hooks the listener with greatly improves the players’
performance.

2. MUSIC AND PAIN RELIEF

Bob Marley once said, "One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain." The
pain that Bob Marley refers to not only pertains to emotional pain, but also to physical pain.
It is a revolutionary idea that music can be used as a replacement for sedative and as a
supplement to anaesthesia before and after surgery. The song named ‘Weightless’ by the
band ‘Marconi Union’ has been specifically composed for this use. The ambient music it
provides is calming and gives a sense of reassurance which medication may do the opposite
of. Moreover, there is no recovery time needed for the use of music instead of sedatives.

The loud banging and clanking and thudding noises are quite terrifying for patients
undergoing an mri scan. Music played during it can be plied as a distraction for it. This will
be welcome by all patients, especially ones who may have claustrophobia.

3. MUSIC AND SLEEP

Music can not only be ever-present in our conscious lives for betterment, but also in our state
of sleeping. Sleep deprivation causes mood changes, weakened immunity, increased risks of
car accidents, high blood pressure, heightened diabetes risks, heart disease risks, poor
balance, low sex drive, bad memory and co-ordination, etc. This confusing and intimidating
array of effects of sleep-deprivation can be combated by using music as an aid to sleep. It has
been noted that listening to calming music for three-quarters of an hour can provide longer
and more restful sleep with less fitful waking in the middle of the night. The shuteye induced
by music can be blissful as it calms the mind and slows heart-beat and may also relax
muscles. It can used to fight insomnia and make dreams more pleasant.

Under videos listed as ‘Calming Sleep Music’ on Youtube, a plethora of comments can be
found stating their positive personal experiences. A user comments, “I live in a city that never
sleeps. That changes tonight. Goodnight, world.” Another states, “When I was passing out
from the music, I was thinking this: Finally, I am one with the stars. No one around to bother
me. I am at peace.” These comments summarize how slow and ambient music can influence
a person’s sleep in a positive way.

4. MUSIC AND PALLIATIVE CARE

Patients with terminal illnesses are entrapped in a situation they can’t escape which involves
both intense emotional and physical pain. This pain can be alleviated or at least lessened
through music therapy. With music which means something to the patient, hospitals are able
to treat the patient as a whole human being and not just reduced to their illness.

HISTORY OF LULLABY
Chances are, irrespective of wherein you're from, your mom sang a lullaby to you while you
have been a child. Lullabies were around for the duration of history, and many of those
nonetheless sung these days are the same as those that had been sung masses of years ago. It
is believed that the term "lullaby" derives from the terms lull-ing and by-ing, soothing sounds
to help a baby sleep off. There are also those who believe the term comes from a Hebrew
saying, "Lilith-Abi," meaning "Lilith be gone4." Lilith was a folklore character who was
supposed to steal kids away at night.

4
Britannica.com/art/music.
One of the earliest written lullabies is from around 2000 BC. The lullaby is etched on a clay
stone that fits in your hand's palm. This particular lullaby in nature is threatening, warning the
child not to cry and disturb the family at night, or it would happen to horrible things.
Listening to many lullabies, you'll see a theme of threats and tactics of fear among them.
Even the lullaby known to nearly everyone, "Rock-a-by-baby," is about danger: boughs
break, cradles plunge from the trees. There are several theories of its significance. Some think
it's about Native American mothers, who placed their babies in birch tree branch hammocks.
Others believe the song has to do with a family living in a tree, with the kids sleeping in
hollowed branches. Whatever the origin, Mother Goose's Melody first saw the song,
published in 1765.

BENEFITS
In addition to assisting baby fall asleep, many scientists think that having a mom sing a
lullaby to her child has other advantages. One such advantage is the bond between the mom
and the baby, which gives the baby a feeling of well-being. Another advantage is the baby's
communication sharing. While a child listens to the lullaby, vital language abilities are
developed. There are those who think that the child's language abilities are suffering as a
consequence as the singing of lullabies happens less and less by today's mothers.

BONNY METHOD
Helen Lindquist Bonny (1921–2010), music teacher and therapist, created a strategy
influenced by humanistic and transpersonal psychological opinions, known as the Bonny
Guided Imaging Method in Music (GIM). Guided imaging relates to a method used in natural
and alternative medicine that includes the use of mental imaging to assist patients with their
physiological and psychological problems. The practitioner often indicates a relaxing and
focused picture, and they strive to discover positive alternatives to their issues through the
use of imagination and conversation. Bonny introduced this psychotherapeutic technique to
the music therapy sector by using music as a means to guide the patient to a higher state of
consciousness where healing and positive self-awareness can occur. The selection of music
for the client is thoroughly chosen based on their musical preferences and session objectives.

The use of guided imagery with autistic children has been found to decrease stereotypical
behaviors and hyperactivity, increase attention and the ability to follow instructions, and
increase self-initiated communication, both verbal and non-verbal.
FINDINGS AND CONCLUSION

The study of music being a healer and using it as a project topic led the researcher to the
conclusion that the role of music and its influence in the mental and physical aspects of our
life and its role in enhancing the social responsibility among the people is very crucial.

Contemporary research implies that music treatment benefits patients with stress, mental and
mental issues since it realizes a feeling of well-being. Researchers at the University of
Sydney found that singing in gatherings for at any rate 30 minutes daily helped individuals
adapt better to low states of mind brought about by constant agony.

Another examination by scientists at Cleveland Clinic in the US found that music helps ease
tenacious, non-harmful agony in grown-ups who "hurt" for at any rate a half year.

Music has additionally been discovered successful in overseeing torment brought about by
malignant conditions in the body and procedural torment. Studies have additionally
demonstrated that music diminishes torment during dental methodology. Playing delicate
music out of sight while working at one's work area has likewise been found to decrease
pressure. Diminished pulses and higher body temperatures are said to show the beginning of
unwinding.

This project argued that more extensive communication and collaboration between the
methods developed within the musical community, and research based on medical science,
could lead us to a better understanding of the place of music as a therapeutic tool, both as
regards as its efficacy and limits.

Whether to ameliorate the health of a depressed being or play a crucial role in societal
changes, music practices cannot be separated from the environment in which it exists.
