Is Going On During
The Shutdown!
Since April 3, GENERAL HOSPITAL has been running
Flashback Friday repeats in order to extend its stock-
pile of ready-to-air episodes. But how far will that
take it? And should the coronavirus pandemic keep
the show dark past the point at which it still has new
material to air, how would it go on? At least a couple
of its Emmy-winning actors have an idea.

Call it the silver lining in the dark cloud of the shut-
downs: As most of the country stayed home the
week of March 23, all four soaps enjoyed a ratings
surge. According to TVLine.com, GH drew its biggest
audience in two years, as did THE BOLD & THE BEAU-
TIFUL. Meanwhile, DAYS OF OUR LIVES garnered its
best numbers in more than a year, and THE YOUNG &
THE RESTLESS’ ratings hit at an 11-month high.
The episodes surrounding little Wiley’s surgery
led GH to a ratings bump.

Facebook that he spent 17 days in the hospital fighting
coronavirus and double pneumonia. “I’m a healthy

Soap Secret Is Out!
Before GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Kelly Thiebaud
brought The Britch back to Port Charles,
the actress had secretly been working on another daytime
drama: DAYS OF OUR LIVES!

The In Depth Story: Thiebaud launched her soap ca-

reer on the NBC soap back in 2011, when she played
Faux Rafe’s fling, Alicia. And last week, she re-
turned as Zoey, the attorney representing
murderer/kidnapper Evan in his quest to
gain custody of his young son. Since DAYS
tapes so far in advance, Thiebaud actually
worked on the soap back in August, long
before she made her return to GH.
As for Thiebaud’s recurring role on
STATION 19, that has come to an end.
At least for now. “I think last night was
my final episode,” she tweeted in late
March. But with the GREY’S ANATO-
MY spin-off picked up for Season 4, she
could return as Eva to seek vengeance
against the lover she blames for widow-
ing her.

Tuck’s getting the chance
to live in two worlds.

Look for GH alum Jessica Tuck (ex-Cassandra) in the new Ama-
zon Prime series UPLOAD, available for streaming on Friday,
May 1. What’s the premise? “You can upload yourself — leav-
ing your body before you actually die — to an afterlife of your
choice,” she tells In Depth. “So you live as an avatar.”
The sci-fi romantic satire centers on Robby Amell’s Nathan,
who has second thoughts after being uploaded to his girl-
friend’s family’s digital afterlife. Tuck is slated to appear in six
episodes as Nathan’s mom, Ivy, who she says is still “living, in
the flesh, on the ground. In the pilot, we see pieces of both
worlds: both the uploaded afterlife and the here and now [on
Earth]... we will continue to do so in the series.
“There are some people that are very funny,” she continues,
“but there are also some very real moments. It’s marrying the
two that is the tricky part, but it works.”

GH Sonny’s Toughest Challenge Yet!
One of the most interesting things about
the Mob war currently unfolding on GEN-
ERAL HOSPITAL is that Sonny is not actu-
ally at the forefront of it. Sure, he’s played a
significant role, but other locals — includ-
ing Jordan, Laura, Robert and Kevin —
have been driving the action. Meanwhile,
Sonny has been struggling to deal with dad
Mike’s deterioration. “This is hell,” he ad-
mitted to Carly, tears welling up in his eyes.
And she, in turn, provided exactly the sup-
port he needed. When he wondered aloud
whether he could handle what was com-
ing, “yes you can,” she insisted. “I’ve got
you.” The last thing we expected when Re-
nault began his attack on Port Charles was
that Sonny would be busier taking emo-
tional hits than ordering physical ones. But
by showing Sonny’s personal struggle
even as his territory comes under fire, the
story manages to play both sides of this
complicated character.

more than Philip (who, during his last
visit, was played by ONE LIFE TO
LIVE’s Rex, John-Paul Lavoisier), whose
life he ruined. First, Deimos blackmailed
his cousin into teaming up against Victor.
Then he had Philip kidnapped and
drugged for not revealing whether
he was the true father of Chloe’s
baby. Once Deimos was finally done
with him, Philip decided that he had
feelings for Chloe. He offered to
leave town with her, but she shot
that idea down. Realizing that he’d
lost ever ything that mattered to Stella left GENERAL HOSPITAL
him, Philip decided to leave Salem to go work… in a hospital!

(Sonny) invites readers into his fam-
ily, his career and his experiences
living with bipolar disorder, depres-
sion and anxiety. And, after working
on the memoir for more than two
years, he’s understandably thrilled
that it’s finally out. “I’m so proud of
the book,” he says. “It’s just a brutal-
ly honest portrayal of my life — the
good and the bad.
“And I didn’t want it to be anything
else,” he hastens to add. “I didn’t
want it to make me look great. I just
wanted the truth.”

audiobook, it made me realize I’ve
been through hell,” he admits. “When
you’re living your life, you take it for
granted. When you read your life, al-
most like a third person looking in,
you go, ‘Damn, that’s a lot!’ There
were three times during taping where
I literally just broke down like a baby
and started bawling.”

stressful time. Some of his posts are
about letting loose and having a laugh,
but as always, Benard is also sharing his
experiences. Being an advocate for men-
tal health is his most important job — and
it’s one that’s growing. For more on that,

solo for a walk or a run to decom-
press and rejuvenate. Exercise can
also be an opportunity to connect
and share time and space with a
family member or friend. I am
walking and hiking every day
— sometimes alone, sometimes on
my phone and sometimes with my
family or a friend. Fresh air and
sunshine will revitalize you. It
makes me feel free and strong and

ven after 15 years, THE YOUNG &
THE RESTLESS’ Amelia Heinle
still remembers how she nearly
missed out on the chance to play
Victoria Newman. “I was a little over-
whelmed when I came in to test for the
role,” remembers the blue-eyed stunner.
“There were about seven other girls who
were there auditioning, and I would have
to test with a lot of actors. I was the last
person to test, and I had all these people
coming in and telling me, ‘I really want
you to get it; this is how you should play it.’
So, I was waiting around, getting nervous,
and finally I’m like, ‘Aaah, get me out of
here! I can’t do this! I’m sure they’ll find
someone in the girls that are auditioning.’
“I got my stuff together to leave — I was
in [the dressing room of] Don Diamont
(ex-Brad; now Bill, THE BOLD & THE
BEAUTIFUL) — and I opened the door,
and [then-casting director] Marnie Saitta
was standing there with this big basket of
chips and cookies, and was like, ‘Snack?’”
Heinle continues with a laugh. “I was
like, ‘Oh, my God, she knew I was going
to leave!’ She could tell I was a flight risk!”

booked the role, but she reveals that it
took a while for her to regard it as long-
term. “I gave myself a year because I
knew there were a lot of variables,” she
confesses. “I thought Heather [Tom, ex-

“A lot of actors do that — it’s like a de-
fense mechanism where you prepare
yourself for the worst,” she adds. “You’re
just trying to be realistic, but the next thing
I knew, I was here a lot longer! It’s crazy to
think that it’s been 15 years, although it
does feel like that sometimes because a lot
came from it. If I wasn’t on the show, I
would not have met Thad [Luckinbill, ex-
J.T.], we would not have had kids [son
Rowe and daughter Georgina], and I

with it! It’s like being part of a sports team.
This is my team! I just felt like I belonged
here, and as corny as this sounds, I feel like
I’m rooting for this team!”

Love At First Scene

In the last decade and a half, Heinle has
earned two Daytime Emmys and has
come to view her alter ego as an extension
of herself — and her TV family like her
own family. “I love the Newmans!” she
declares. “There is a special connection
that they have with each other. I can’t
imagine being outside that. Some other

Phyllis. But I really love our family.
“I knew this was going to be an important
role,” she concludes. “It’s always been an

“My Grandma Mimi actually had her gas pumped by
Elvis when he worked at the gas station when he was
younger,” the actor told us. Of course, if Elvis was the
topic, the 15-year-old ball of energy was going to
give a full-blown performance of “Viva Las Vegas”
for his audience — again, his mom and photogra-
pher Jim Warren. “I love singing Elvis music and
dancing like him because he’s like nobody else,”
said Arbab. “He’s so unique and different that it
makes it so fun to impersonate him. Of course, I
have to lift my lip up and get into the low voice.”

B ack when GENERAL HOSPITAL’s
Kin Shriner was a young buck, he
was up on all the Hollywood hot spots,
but these days, he enjoys a much qui-
eter life. “I’ve kind of outlasted all my
friends in Los Angeles — I’m like
the last man standing,” cracks
Scotty’s portrayer. “But I’ve got
my girlfriend, Trish [Ramish],
I’ve got GH, and I’ve got my
Vespa! So when I’m not going
to work, I can pretty much
take my time, take it easy and
do whatever I want.”
That said, Shriner does have
a bit of a morning routine. He
starts with a coffee and then
hops on his beloved Vespa to
hit the gym — where he does

more than just get a workout. “I’ve been
going for years, so I socialize with my
friends while I ride the bike for cardio for
about 45 minutes,” he says. “My brother
[Wil] has a yacht club in Florida where he
kibitzes and goofs off, I have a gym where
I do the same thing!
“I wish it were a yacht club serving
drinks,” he adds with a grin, “but I enjoy
my mornings.”
From there, it’s back home to finish his
workout, freshen up and learn his lines.
Then, if Jacklyn Zeman (Bobbie) has her
way, he and Trish might hop into a real car
to visit her for brunch in Marina del Ray. Or
perhaps he’ll catch a movie with Maurice
Benard (Sonny). But truth be told, you’re
most likely to find Shriner tooling around
on his Vespa and just enjoying his home,
sweet home — at least, that’s what Soaps In
Depth found him doing when he let us fol-
low him around for a day!

— even though one might think I do!”

“I took up cooking about three years

ago, and it’s become part of my day,”
Shriner reveals. “At around three
o’clock, I go to the grocery store and
figure out what to make. Then I come
out and pick a few lemons from this
incredible tree in the backyard,
because I use a lot of it in my cooking.”

Whether learning lines or relaxing,

Shriner loves being in his “painted
aquarium” inspired by The Breakers’
fish-tank bar in Palm Beach. “You
looked down, and there were fish
swimming underneath you, but I don’t
have a tank,” he says. “I have a
beautiful blue table with fish
swimming around that was
custom-painted by an artist friend
about 20 years ago, then these guys on

They’re an art form. So if
you’re lucky enough to get the
giant print poster and it
happens to be in French, you’ll
take it,” Shriner says. “This is
actually the room I spend most
of my time in. It has a fireplace
and Turner Classic Movies is on
the TV around the clock. I call
it the TCM room.”

about 100 pull-ups,” Shriner reveals.
“I discovered the chin-up bar long
before gyms existed. My father
gave us one when we were 8. It’s
not an attractive thing to have in
your house... but I use it well.”

“When people see me with a little

bag on my arm, riding my yellow
Vespa, it brings a smile to their faces,
because it just looks like I’m having a
good time — and I am having a good
time,” Shriner grins. “I rode
motorcycles all my life, but 20 years
ago, I decided I didn’t need all that
power. Then I went to Florence, Italy,
and noticed everybody rode scooters.
I fell for the lifestyle.”

T he soap community has been dealt

yet another blow. On March 28,
beloved veteran actor John Calla-
han suf fered a massive stroke and
passed away at the age of 66.
Over the course of his nearly 40-year
career, the leading man appeared on al-
most a dozen dramas, both daytime
(GENERAL HOSPITAL was his first,
DAYS OF OUR LIVES his last) and
primetime (from FALCON CREST to
DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES). But he

membered for his 13-year run on ALL
MY CHILDREN as Edmund Grey, a
Pulitzer Prize-winning jour nalist
whose true calling might have been
stories of the love variety.
Though the character was hooked up
with a number of romantic interests on
the ABC soap — Callahan was so good,
he could throw sparks with a wall — his
most successful pairing was with Eva
LaRue’s Dr. Maria Santos. The super-
couple’s portrayers were even married
from 1996 to 2005 and, at the time of
Callahan’s death, were co-parenting
daughter Kaya, 18.

Soaps In Depth. “And I say that it beats
working. I used to dig ditches, I’ve driv-

Barbara, and a couple of months ago, he took
Kaya and me on a road trip to Santa Barbara
to show her the campus as a college option.
We had so much fun, and the two of us were
looking so forward to driving together this fall
to take Kaya off to college. It is going to be
sad to have to experience this milestone in
Kaya’s life without him.”

When the stor y picks up on
Thursday, April 30 (at 8 p.m.
EST), it will have been four
months since Scott Perry’s pass-
ing left his doctor wife, Robin, and
their five children at loose ends. Thanks
to the demands of work and school, ev-
eryone appears to have moved on, but as
Rater says often happens with grief,
“they have good days and bad days.”
Four’s A Crowd!
Expecting that Robin would need assis-
tance, Scott had asked Oliver (his oncol-
ogist and her pal), Larry (whom he’d
sponsored in AA) and Anthony (his long-
time friend and fellow restaurateur) to
step in. But what he hadn’t done was lay
out the rules. “The dads are finding their
way,” Phelan shares. “But what does the
commitment really mean? And how do
they balance their own lives with being
in the life of this family?”
In their eagerness to help, the men in-
advertently cross the line with Robin.
“And now that Oliver is seeing the Per-

tunity for Anthony to prove himself.

new husband Evan had been making
plans to start their life in New York. How-
ever, Phelan explains, the aspiring author
“realizes the story she wants to write is in
Savannah.” What if investigating the past
reveals things about Scott that she
shouldn’t know? At the going-away party,
connecting with biological mother Mi-
chelle just might inform Luly’s decision.

LIVES’ Ben now has his whole life in
front of him. The question is, what’s he
going to do with it? Can he make good
on this second chance to put behind him

Portrayer Robert Scott Wilson has
faith in the reformed Necktie Killer. But
he’s almost as eager to see Ben fail as he
is to see him succeed. “I don’t ever want
him to become a squeaky-clean charac-
ter,” the actor admits. “He always has to

Although Wilson insists that his charac-
ter “absolutely wants [that],” he also
notes that Ben first needs to get his
ducks in a row. “Over the coming
months, you’ll see that he gets a great
job, and he gets to work with somebody
that I also love. It’s going to be terrific!”
As he begins this next story arc, the
actor wants to acknowledge the “over-

Wilson’s film, Devil’s Revenge. In it, an ar-
cheologist discovers that the only way to
stop a curse is to return to a cave and de-
stroy the relic found within. “That was a
fun little horror thriller that I got to be part
of,” Wilson shares. “It was shot in caves in
Louisville, Kentucky.” Originally titled The
Relic, the movie features a host of familiar
faces. “I did it because I got to work with
some pretty awesome actors,” Wilson ex-
plains. “William Shatner played my grand-
father, Jeri Ryan played my mom, and Ja-
son Brooks, who was a DAYS guy [as Peter
Blake] back in the ’90s, played my dad.”
