Information for Recitals

You must register for the appropriate class in order to reserve a date and give a
recital. Junior performance majors – MUP 390, senior performance majors – MUP
490, music education majors – MUP 491, or graduate students – MUP 690

All public performances by members of the School of Music should reflect the highest
possible standards of excellence, not only musically, but in all other areas of concert
production. These include, but are not limited to, choice of literature, appropriate
dress, stage deportment, and the appearance and set-up of the concert hall.

In accordance with the above policy, and in order to ensure the continued high standards of the
School of Music, the following guidelines should be understood and observed by all the students.

When deciding your program content, remember that your teacher and the School of Music’s
director will go over the program and must:
A. Agree on memorization requirements.
B. Approve your program, giving attention to:
1) appropriate jury level
2) timing requirements
3) appropriateness of literature
4) representative pieces from a variety of style periods

Once the program has been chosen, fill out a Recital Permit Form with the help of your applied
teacher. Type up the exact approved program. This will be considered your final program. If
you make changes later, the program must be re-approved. Have your teacher sign the form.
You must then turn in the form (page 1 & 2 of this document) along with a copy of your printed
program to Lori Arsenault. She will then forward it to the director of the School of Music for
final approval. This procedure must take place no later than 6 weeks prior to recital date.

You must also submit your program electronically to larsenault@usm.maine.edu

 The School of Music will provide you with a printed program a day or two before the
recital date.
 Program notes are not printed by the School of Music. You may insert your own if
needed.
 Vocalists who want to include translations in their programs must see Lori for
approval and implementation.

If, for any reason, you have to cancel your scheduled recital time or date, notify Lori
Arsenault immediately. You will not be able to re-schedule within the same semester, except
in special circumstances.

Rehearsals in Corthell Concert Hall from are scheduled through the School of Music office (780-
5265) or the Concert Manager. All rehearsals in the Concert Hall must be scheduled through
Chris Alden-Kinne or Lori Arsenault and are on a space available basis. Please be aware that you
may need to secure a campus police authorization form in order to use the space for evening or
week-end rehearsals.
Staffing for Your Recital

 You’ll be assigned staff to run your recital. A stage manager is mandatory. S/he
needs to be given the "stage manager guide lines" included at the end of this
packet. This person will prepare the hall, turn the lights on and off at the start,
following intermission, at the end, and will close the hall after the concert.

 A recording technician (usually a work-study student) will be hired to record the

concert. Please check the schedule in Lori’s office to find your staff team. It is
your responsibility to contact them for details.

 You’ll be assigned at least one usher for your recital: an usher hands out
programs, but also helps people to find the hall and to meet any special needs. See
Lori for a list and phone numbers of available students.

 If you have plans to have friends of yours be your stage manager and usher,
please tell Lori as soon as possible. They must be qualified, knowing the
procedures, and they must be put on the Concert Manager’s schedule. Staff have
been assigned to your recital already, and in fairness to them, they should not
come to your recital at the appointed time to find someone else doing their job.
Thank you for your consideration.

What You are Responsible For

 You must design and print your own posters: design must be approved by Lori
before printing.

 Publicity: Joyce Doyle will be happy to assist you in notifying the media about
your recital, but unless you speak with her, only on-campus notices will be sent
out. You must get prior approval from Joyce Doyle before sending any news
releases to the media. Please note: DFM has requested that no posters be taped
to painted surfaces in Corthell hall.

 Reception: Two tables are kept in the lobby for receptions. These are at your
disposal. You are advised to cover a set table with a cloth during your
performance, and have family or friends prepared to uncover it and provide
hospitality before your guests come down the stairs. Your house manager will
assist with hospitality and clean up after your reception, but only after his/her
responsibilities in the Concert Hall have been completed.

 Finding an accompanist: The School of Music recommends using student

accompanists whenever possible especially since all piano majors must fulfill an
accompanying requirement. There are several professional accompanists
available in this area for various fees. Your applied teacher can make a
recommendation to you. You should contact any accompanist as soon as you are
aware that you have an upcoming need. This will give the accompanist enough
time to learn the music and to meet with you for rehearsals. Your accompanist
needs to sign the permit!
