GPRS monitoring
applications

Introduction
The impressive growth in cellular mobile telephony and
in the number of Internet users represents an exciting
market potential for a service that combines both
innovations: cellular and wireless data services. Within
the next few years there will be extensive demand for
wireless data services. In particular, users will require
high-performance wireless Internet access.
Existing cellular data services do not fulfill the needs of
users and providers. From the user’s point of view, data
rates are too slow while connection setup takes too
long and is rather complicated. Moreover, the service is
too expensive for most users. From the technical point
of view, the drawback lies in the fact that current
wireless data services are based on circuit switched
radio transmission.
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a new
bearer service for GSM that greatly improves and
simplifies wireless access to packet data networks like
the Internet/Intranets. It applies a packet radio principle
to transfer user data packets in an efficient way
between GSM mobile stations and external packet data
networks. Packets can be directly routed from GPRS
mobile stations to packet switched networks. IP (i.e.
the global Internet or private/corporate Intranets) and
X.25 networks are supported in the current version of
GPRS. Users of GPRS benefit from shorter access times
and higher data rates. In conventional GSM,
connection set up takes several seconds and
rates for data transmission are restricted to 9.6
Kbit/s. GPRS in practice offers session
establishment times below one second and
ISDN-like data rates. In addition, GPRS packet
transmission offers billing that is more user
friendly than that offered by circuit switched
services. In circuit switched services, billing is
based on the duration of the connection.
In contrast to this, with packet switched
services, billing can be based on the amount of
transmitted data.

Ghepardo Applications

Ghepardo Concept
The Ghepardo protocol analyzer/server is everything you need
a protocol analyzer to be and more. In addition to being the most
versatile protocol analyzer available, it is also a powerful server,
allowing World Wide Web access and global distributed probe
analysis from anywhere.
Imagine being able to do a global network analysis from your
hotel room, or network troubleshooting from your home PC, in
complete security. With the Ghepardo system, you can. The
Ghepardo system offers you many benefits/features:

■ Web-based. Ghepardo servers are accessible from any

Web browser on any platform from anywhere in the world.
■ Multi-user. Up to 32 users can independently access and
monitor any Ghepardo analyzer/server at any time.
■ Multi-protocol.The Ghepardo system supports the
monitoring of all the main GPRS interfaces and of the TCP/IP
protocol transported over the Gb interface.
■ Multi-interface.T1, E1 and V.xx interfaces are supported, up
to 16 interfaces with two timeslots each, or up to 8 interfaces
with up to 31 timeslots per physical trunk.
■ Call Detail Record. Ghepardo Server can generate Call
Detail Records (and hundreds of other reports) and forward
them to a central database. All reports are Web-accessible.

Such a highly flexible configuration allows different physical

interfaces to be used simultaneously. The modular design and
expandability guarantee the customer’s investment for future
needs.

The revolutionary and unique client-server approach adopted

for the User Interface allows multiple users to access
simultaneously a Ghepardo while monitoring the traffic, through
any standard TCP/IP network. No need of special applications on
the client side: only a standard Internet Browser is required.
