The last week of my clinical, the significant and memorable leadership experience I had
was with a kindergarten student who will not stop crying. The staff that was overseeing the
kindergarten and first grade room approached me and explained that the student was crying very
loudly and was starting to distract the other students. I tried to calm the student, but I was
unsuccessful, so I placed her in a classroom by herself away from the other students. I tried
talking to the student to see what was wrong. I asked if anything was hurting or if there was a
problem at home, and she said no. The student stated she does not like her online teacher and
wants to go outside and play. I explain to her how online learning works and that she will get to
go outside and play on during her next break. She continued to cry aloud. Different
administrators approached her to try to calm the student but nothing was successful. She isolated
herself under a desk inside the classroom and began to kick and scream. After about 30 minutes,
she was ready to go into the classroom with her peers. A few moments later, the student was
sleeping in front of the computer. The Dean of Student stated she will write a report and let the
parents know that next time she does that she will be suspended for two days. This situation was
new to me because I never taught elementary students, only junior and high school students.
According to the Principal, I did the right thing because she was disturbing other students from
learning. In addition, young students are having problems because online learning is new to
them. It seemed as if the student wanted attention. Having this experience, I realized that I will
stick with Junior and High school students. This experience connects with ELCC standard five.
