1. i) Illustrate the advantages of HVDC transmission over HDAC transmission for bulk power transmission. 7
ii) How does “break even” distance of transmission line decide the cost of power transmission? 3

2. i) Explain the function of different types of filters used at different points in HVDC converter station. 5
ii) Prove that insulation required for D.C. system is 0.866 times that required for A.C. system. Assume the 5
power transmitted, percentage losses and size of conductors are same for both systems.

3. i) Illustrate the method to choose voltage level in DC transmission. 5

ii) Explain in brief about converter control characteristics. 5

4. i) Explain how to choose converter configuration for any number of pulses. 5

ii) For converter operation, prove that Cosα =Cosϴ , if α is the firing angle and Cosϴ is the power factor. 5

5. i) Analyze two and three valve conduction mode of six pulse line commutated converter. 5
ii) For a 12 pulse converter with q=4, s=3, r=1, calculate the maximum DC power and transformer ratings 5
(valve side winding), if PIV rating of the valve is V and the rms current rating is I.

6. i) Enumerate the relative merits and demerits of constant current control and constant voltage control of 5
HVDC link.
ii) Discuss about the basic two level Graetz bridge VSC, showing relevant voltage waveforms. Compare it 5
with a three level VSC.

7. i) With a neat schematic diagram, state the functions of different components and apparatus used in 5
Converter Station.
ii) Why are harmonics generated in HVDC converter and what are the problems associated with the 5
harmonics. Suggest some remedial measures.

8. i) Classify various types of FACTS controllers giving examples in each case. 5

ii) Give comparison between STATCOM and SVC. 5
