He thinks back over his career since he began working in management as young graduate 30 years ago, During his first few months as assistant to the chief executive officer Sraaus middle managers told him not to worry too much about the theory ef management he had studied because, they said, things worked differently ineractice. Pete, however, did not let them influence him and applied the theory exactly as he had been taught. ‘After a few years he was transferred to a position then known as assis- tant administrative officer. Here he worked hard to improve the filing system and to get other activities to function effectively. ‘A few months after Pete had completed his Master's degree in management, he was promoted to head of planning and organisation. He inspired the personnel of his department to continually do their best and inter reorganised the department through a combination of team effort and his insight into the business. The planning department started meeting on 2 regular basis and implemented a suggestion system which improved the functioning of the business as a whole, These achievements did not go unnoticed by top management and as a result Pete was promoted to chief executive officer.
