INSTRUCTIONS Answer all Questions. Each question carries 20 marks Question 1 (20) 1.1 Distinguish between the following: a) Estimate and estimate. b) Power of a test and level of significance. ) Critical values and critical region. 4) Type Land Type Il error. 1.2 For a dataset obtained from a sample, n=81 and population is normally distributed. =23. The 8) What is the point estimate of yr b) Make a 95% confidence interval for uw ©) What is the margin of error of estimate for part b? Question 2 (20) 2.1 Suppose that 800 students were selected at random from a student body of 20 000 and given shots to prevent a certain type of flu. All 800 students were exposed to the flu, and 600 of them did not get flu. Let p Let p represent the probability that the shot will be successful for any single student selected at random from the entire population of 20 000. Let g be the probability that the shot is not successfl. a) What is the number of trials n? b) What is the value of x What are the point estimates for p_ and ¢ 4) Would it seem that the number of trials is large enough to justify a normal approximation to the binomial? ©) Find a 99% confidence interval for p 22 ‘The average annual earnings of gynecologists are R230 000 and those of Surgeons are R225 000. Suppose that these means are based on random samples of 300 gynecologists and Surgeons and that the population standard deviations of the annual earnings of gynecologists and Surgeons are R28 000 and R32 000 respectively. Test at the 1% significance level whether the mean annual eamings of gynecologists and ‘Surgeons are different. Question 3 20) 31 32 33 ‘You want to estimate the mean number of Sentences in a magazine advertisement. How ‘many magazine advertisements must be included in the sample if you want to be 95% ‘confident that the sample mean is within 1 sentence of the population mean and the standard deviation is equal to 5.0? ‘A company manufactures large rocket engines used to project satellites into space. The government buys the rockets, and the contract specifies that these engines are to use an average of $500 pounds of rocket fuel the first 15 seconds of operation. The company claims that their engines fit specifications. To test the claim, an inspector randomly selects six such engines from the warehouse. These six engines are fired 15 seconds ‘each, and the fuel consumption for each engine is measured. For all six engines, the mean fuel consumption is ¥=5690 pounds and the standard deviation is $= 250 pounds. Is there justified at the 5% level of significance? ‘The macek Country Clerk wishes to yprove voter registration. One method under consideration is to send reminders in the mail to all citizens in the country who are cligible to register. As a pilot study to determine if this method will actually improve voter registration, a random sample was randomly divided into two groups. Group 1: There were 625 people in this group. No reminders to register were sent to them. The number of potential voters from this group who registered was 295. Group 2: This group also contained 625 people. Reminders were sent in the mail to each member in the group, and the number who registered to vote was 350. (20) a) Analysis of Anova b) Treatment 4.2 Give two assumptions of one way Anova 43 A consumer organization was concerned about the differences between the advertised sizes of containers and the actual amount of product. In a preliminary study, six packages of three different brands of margarine that are supposed to contain 500ml were measured. The differences from 00 ml are listed here. Do these data provide sufficient evidenee to conclude that differences exist between the three brands? Use 1% significance level. Brand 1 Brand 2 Brand 3 if 2 1 3 2 2 3 4 4 0 a 2 1 0 3 0 4 4 Question 4 20) 5.1 List 3 properties of a Chi-square curve. 5.2 Explain the difference between Goodness of Fit test and Contingency table. 5.3 Two random samples, one of 95 blue collar workers and a second of 50 white collar workers, were taken from a large company. These workers were asked about their certain company issue. The following table gives the results of the survey. Uneertai Blue collar workers 2 White collar 3 workers, Using 5% significance level, test the null hypothesis that the distributions of homogenous for the two groups of workers. @@@O@DAAGAOQQS|VS|ANAGAQAQQAAGE SeeeeeCeeCLCE Table! ~ Areas Undet thi 5 3 3 E 5 2 cor enn pas om, OO, 0ST 0.00 eaig2 tll \ oo te BSSRS 8 9s :: 3 AGES REESE 2453 Bees Snses 5 91 oa 2031 03 0.09 i008 ‘0)2s ites 0307 aoe 0338 eos Bost a j table 3 ‘Theentrisin this tebl ro the eigen! velues for chiaguateforiwhichthearea tothe catatvavesie x? right under the curve s equal t0 etalon * ° PoC) “Front oh ain Rghi-nend Tal a [roms [ene _[_onrs_[ sso | csco_| O08 pose [oes | a010 | 000s “soma | ancorsT | oamaea | pooues | alse | 271 su] sorp ees] 78 a] gummy | Smoot” | casos | oi | Oz | oss fo | aae| sar] 108 2| omer | ons | ous | ose | Of8 | ore qn | sos] 4 | 9 3| om. | Gan | oa [amt | te) Oe) im | a | 4s 4) om eee [ome [vas ponee | ot was | ist | 188 st ecw [om |i [ie | am |tes | ie vas | wes | tas $) ee | ae ia fear fam |e iso | ss | 203 a) 14 ta} | aoe [ae | ome | ass ps | po 3| 173 ms ER fas fee foes fey a) Bs to} 216 eae | ae [ar | tao ptt | 32 nu} 20 108 32 4st sss | 12 | 9a [ome | 27 | 8t n| 307 wos) sas | ooo | me | me | 2 m3 a] 397 Sor | 390° | 70 | 188 za | 77 | 28 tw) aon.
