Unit 5: SOLVING WORD PROBLEMS
STEPS:
1. Read the problem carefully and repeat reading until it is
thoroughly understood.
2. Identify the given quantities.
- Given quantities could be written as numerical values or
words in the given word problems.
- In the format Given-Required-Solution of answering
word problems, all the Given quantities must be identified
well.
3. Find out what is required or is asked in the problem.
- The Required must never be written in a WH-question
format.
- The Required should be written in a statement form.
4. If it is possible draw or make a diagram.
- Diagrams are only drawn if needed by the problem,
specifically if the problem involves trigonometry and/or
geometry.
5. Write the formula needed.
6. Solve the problem.
- Don’t forget to copy the unit/s of the given.
- The unit/s should be the same all throughout the solution.
If conversion is needed, convert the given at the beginning
of the solution. For example, the given is in centimeter
(cm) but the required needs measurement in meter (m),
you can convert the centimeter to meter using the rule that
1 m = 10cm.
Example:
1) Sandy went shopping yesterday. She brought 12 notebooks
at ₱25.00 each, 4 ball pens at ₱12.00 each, a ruler at ₱24.00, a
box of crayon at ₱35.00, 3 roll pads at ₱14.00 per roll and a
pentel pen at ₱24.00. How much did she spend all in all?
Given: 12 notebooks at ₱25.00 each
4 ball pens at ₱12.00 each
1 ruler at ₱24.00
1 box of crayon at ₱35.00
3 roll pads at ₱14.00 per roll
1 pentel pen at ₱24.00
Required: The amount spent by Sandy
2) Pinky bought a colored TV which costs ₱35, 800. If she
made a down payment of ₱5,000 and the remainder be paid in
10 monthly equal installments, how much is the monthly due?
Given: ₱35, 800 – price of colored TV
₱5, 000 – down payment
10 months installment
Required: Pinky’s monthly due for the next 10 months
Solution:
₱35, 800 - ₱5, 000 = ₱30, 8000
₱30, 800 ÷ 10 = ₱3, 080.00
Pinky’s monthly due for the next 10 months is ₱3, 080.00

total capacity is for 45 boarders. If she charges each boarder
₱700 per month, how much is her monthly income assuming
that the boarding house is full? How much is the expected

2)Sheila works in the bank as a teller. One time she had 200
pieces of ₱20.00 bill, 50 pieces of ₱50.00 bill, 100 pieces of
₱100.00 bill, 75 pieces of ₱500.00 bill. How much money
did Sheila have at that time?
3)A box of donuts costs ₱550.00. If there are 25 pieces of
donuts inside the box, how much would each donut cost?
4)When Cassidy turned 9, her height was 120cm. Her height
increases by 6 cm every year during the next 5 years. What
will Cassidy’s height be when she turns 14?
5)The enrollment for this semester recorded 35 classes each
with 48 students, 10 classes each with 50 students and 5
classes each with 60 students. How many number of
students are recorded?

Solution:
12 x ₱15.00 = ₱180.00
4 x ₱12.00 = ₱ 48.00
1 x ₱24.00 = ₱ 24.00
1 x ₱35.00 = ₱ 35.00
3 x ₱14.00 = ₱ 42.00
1 x ₱24.00 = ₱ 24.00
₱353.00

The total amount spent by Sandy was ₱353.00.
