−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−Safety Notice−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−
We make a particular effort to manufacture safe products. However,
NTK cutting tools may be broken due to a sudden increase of the
cutting load or excessive tool wear, which could possibly cause injuries
to operators. To protect the operators from such accidents, please note
the following when operating a cutting tool:
◎ Install shielding plates or wear protective clothes and
glasses.
◎ Do not touch the cutting edge with bare hand because it
is sharp.
WARNING
◎ Use genuine NTK parts for parts and drivers, etc.
◎ Check sharpness and replace the tool early if necessary.
◎ Check the sharpness of tools and exchange them at an
early stage.
We do not recommend you to grind cutting tools because grinding may
cause cracks and improper finishing, possibly resulting in breakage of
the tool.

SE1
SE1
■ SE1 is an aluminum oxide ceramic material with special composition which increases both
notch wear resistance and thermal shock resistance.
■ SE1 offers better surface roughness in finish apprication of cast irons where competitor's
aluminum oxide ceramics have excessive notch wear.
■ SE1 also makes high-speed finish machining of cast irons with coolant conditions possible.
Use SE1 where competitor's aluminum oxide ceramics breaks because of the lack of thermal
shock resistance.
Feature
■ Better surface finishes compared to competitor's aluminum oxide ceramics.
■ Better thermal shock resistance compared to competitor's aluminum oxide ceramics.
■ Higher toughness compared to competitor's aluminum oxide ceramics.

・UC2 doubled tool life over the PCD. Productivity was improved.
・Although the PCD can be re-ground eight times, UC2 allowed a cost reduction by extending the life of the tool and using
a four-cornered insert.
・The competitor's PCD insert cannot machine a single part because of chatter and the brazed tip coming off.
・The long effective cutting-edge on the UC2 inserts can take deeper cuts, and its chipbreaker eliminated chatter.
111
Diamond Coated Carbide
・The life of UC2 can be extended to 1.3 times that of a competitor's PCD tool, thus allowing productivity to be correspondingly
CBN / Diamond
improved.
・UC2 insert can cut to greater depths than conventional PCD tools. This features requires less insert changes.
・Carbide inserts caused too much build-up edge which resulted in insert failure.
・UC2 has excellent build-up edge resistance. UC2 comes in a variety of shapes and can extend tool life 10 times vs.
carbide inserts.

Insert Grades for Cast Irons
SX1, SX6 & SX8 - Silicon Nitride Ceramics for Milling of Gray Cast Irons
NTK silicon nitride ceramics SX1, SX6 & SX8 make high-speed milling of cast iron possible. SX1 and SX6
grades have the highest silicon nitride content on the market. Both grades offer exceptional thermal shock
resistance and wear resistance at high cutting speeds. Finer finishes and flatter surfaces can be obtained when
SX1 and SX6 wiper inserts are used in high-speed milling. SX8 is the toughest silicon nitride grade for high
speed milling of cast iron. Use SX8 for applications where lack of fracture toughness due to heavy depth of
cut causes insert breakage.
SX1 Features
■ Excellent notch wear resistance at high speeds
■ Better thermal shock resistance at high speeds
SX8 Features
■ Toughest silicon nitride ceramics on the market

Insert Grades for High Temperature Alloys & Hardened Steels
SX5 & SX9 - SiAlON Ceramics for Milling of High Temperature Alloys
NTK SX5 and SX9 are SiAlON ceramics for high-speed milling of high temperature alloys. SiAlON ceramics
offer better wear resistance and higher toughness than silicon nitride ceramics when machining high
temperature alloys. SX5 is the toughest SiAlON grade on the market for machining high temperature alloys at
high cutting speed. Use SX5 for applications where lack of fracture toughness due to heavy depth of cut
causes insert breakage. SX9 has both the best thermal shock resistance and the best noth wear resistance in the
SiAlON ceramics. Use SX9 for applications where thermal shock resistance or notch wear due to high-speed
cutting cause insert breakage.

WA1, Whisker-Reinforced Ceramic for Milling of High Temperature Alloys and Hardened Steels
NTK WA1 is a whisker-reinforced ceramic material with silicon-carbide(SiC) whiskers added to alumina. WA1
has been used widely for machining high temperature alloys and machining hardened steel at high cutting speeds.
WA1 has a higher (SiC) content than other competitor's whisker-reinforced ceramics. The resulting material,
WA1, shows higher toughness and better thermal shock resistance which are needed in milling applications.

Insert Grades for Steels
C7X - Cermet for Milling of Ductile Irons & Steels
NTK's newest cermet C7X, is designed for higher speed milling of ductile iron, carbon steels, alloy steels and
stainless steels. By adding special alloy binders in the composition,C7X has special alloy binders which increase
both its wear and thermal shock resistance. Also, C7X has increased fracture toughness comparable with some
carbide milling grades on the market.
C7X Features
■ Stable performance on semi-finishing and finishing steel regardless of dry or wet conditions
■ High fracture toughness makes some roughing as well as finishing operations possible
■ Stable tool life when milling with coolant by reducing chipping and breakage due to thermal cracks

蘆How To Reduce Notch Wear
Notching is the main failure when machining nickel based alloys. Notching can be reduced by using proper insert
grade, insert shape and re-programing. The following information should help to minimize this problem.
191
MATERIAL SELECTION FOR MACHINING HIGH TEMPERATURE ALLOYS
D) Effect of lead angles (Fig.4)
-5
When cutting nickel based alloys consideration
should be given to using the largest lead angle
possible. When using large lead angles, the cutting -5 0 15
0
forces are spread over a larger surface area of the 45
insert. This will also improve tool life and surface
finish while reducing notching. As the lead angle
15
increases the chip will flow more easily.
Typical insert wear pattern showing the effect of
various lead angle changes and the resulting 45
increase of depth of cut notching.
E) Effect of Ramping
(Fig.5)
feed
Notch wear on the insert cutting edge as shown in (Fig. 5) is the result of multiple passes being taken at the same
depth of cut. This type of wear will minimize tool life.
The following programming examples will help to minimize this mode of failure.
(Fig.6)
feed
Programming "ramping" cuts in the same cutting direction is one of the best procedures to use to minimize
notching. By varying the DOC, wear is distributed over the entire cutting edge not on one point.
(Fig.7)
Technical Information
feed
Another programming change that may help to reduce notching is by varying the depth of cut . Again, the same
principle applies, notching takes place at various points on the cutting edge rather than concentrated at one point
as (Fig.5)
192
蘆How To Reduce Flank Wear
As mentioned earlier, SX5 & SX9 do not have the same flank wear resistance as WA1 at high cutting speeds. Use
WA1 for best flank wear resistance needed. Flank wear can be reduced by changing to optimized speeds & feeds for
SX5 & SX9.
(Fig.8)

SX9
Flaking Breakage
193
MATERIAL SELECTION FOR MACHINING HIGH TEMPERATURE ALLOYS
When the insert breakage happens at the begin of cut scale, it might be caused by too
high cutting speeds & feeds.
Knowing the hardness of the work material before the (Fig.9)
cutting begins may make all the difference between suc-
cess or failure. Many times on the shop floor the operator
does not know the part hardness.
If this information is not known then more time is need-
ed in the testing procedure trying to find the optimum f f/2
speed and feed range. As the material hardness increases
speed should decrease. Also, parts that have a forget scale
work surface require a 25% speed and feed reduction
until the scale is gone. This type of programing change
will reduce the potential of notching as a failure mode.
蘆Milling
The dynamic toughness and wear resistance of both SX5 & SX9 grades open up a new frontier in high speed
milling of nickel-based alloys. Successful applications include the following :
1) Speed ranges of 2000-3500SFM
2) Feed ranges of ( .003-.006") per tooth
3) No coolant should be used when milling
4) Use RPG-32, RPG-43 or RNG-45 inserts

GUIDELINES FOR CERMET SUCCESS
Use a Rigid Set-Up.
NTK cermets work best when both the machine and work

Fracture Toughness.
Cermets are best used in semi-finishing and finishing applications. Cermets do not bend - carbides do.
Roughing through scaled surfaces are usually best performed by carbides. Cermets can machine
parts with interruptions but care must be taken in the form of larger lead angles, stronger insert
geometries and larger nose radius. Do not rough any material using a 55°or 35°rhomboid cermet

MATERIAL SELECTION - MACHINING STAINLESS STEELS
Surface Finish. Cermets resist cutting edge build-up and are much freer cutting than carbides.
As a result, surface finishes on stainless steels are excellent.
Chip Control. Stringy chips are a constant problem when machining stainless steels. By using
NTK's variety of chipbreakers, this problem can be solved.
Chipbreakers. Positive geometries and positive chipbreakers work best on stainless. Several
NTK chipbreaker designs show best results - NI, FN, ZP, CM5, B&C. See chip control pages for
specifications.
