CL 686: Advanced Process Control

Paper Reading Assignment (10 marks)

How to select your reading assignment:

Step 1: Choose your reading assignment and project partner. Each group consists of 2
members.

Step 2: From "Paper Reading Assignment" section in Moodle Course CL 686 down-
load zipped …les containing MPC application/theory papers. Decide which paper you want
to read and present as part of your reading assignment.

Step 3: Use the following link to a shared editable spreadsheet …le titled "CL 686 Paper
Reading Assignment" on my Google Drive

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Dj3xoDdhXVCiV-3ESFgc-OekQKyW62HpP_YnteUqOhk
and record the paper number against your name.

Note:

– Each group needs to read and present an application/theory paper which is di¤erent
from all other groups. From the shared Google spreadsheet …le, you will be able to
see which papers have already been taken up.
– In case a group wants to read some other theory paper or some other application
domain paper (not covered in the uploaded papers), then the group can search for
a suitable one from list of references given in the various MPC review papers up-
loaded in Moodle. Select a paper and send across reference to that paper to me on
’sachin@iitb.ac.in’for approval. (In case you are unable to download some paper you
wish to read, then please let me know. I can download and send it across.) If I …nd
the paper suitable for the reading assignment, then that group can present the chosen
paper.

I have uploaded my lecture notes on MPC on the course Moodle page. You can view the
following two videos from my NPTEL course which explains MPC algorithm

Paper Presentation:
Each group has been assigned a paper on MPC application/theory for reading. Each group is
expected to make a presentation in a 20 minute slot. Out of 20 min, 15 minutes will be reserved
for presentation and 5 minutes will be reserved for question and answer and discussion session.
Each group should prepare 12 to 15 slides (excluding the title and references slide) based on the
selected paper.

1
1. The presentation is expected to cover

(a) Motivation and research objectives of the paper

(b) Control relevant dynamic model used for MPC formulation and state estimation
approach
(c) Details of MPC formulation
(d) Numerical solution strategy
(e) One or two sample results
(f) Main conclusions
(g) References

2. Taking state estimation and MPC material covered in the course as a basis, you can choose
to highlight main di¤erences between the paper and the classroom material. You don’t
have to repeat things that everyone is expected to know. This will help in making your
presentation short and crisp.

3. Dates for submission of the presentation slides and for presentations will be a week after
institute opens (i.e. after 6’th April, 2020 as of now).
