Pancakes,

pancakes
BY ERIC CARLE
ADAPTED BY: NATALIA ESPITIA
Keekerikee crows the
rooster.

Jack wakes up and looks out the window and

thinks: “I want to have a big pancake for
breakfast” but Jack’s mother is very busy in
the kitchen.

“Mother” says Jack “I want a big pancake for

breakfast!”

“Ok, but I’m very busy, so you have to help

me” She answers

“How can I help you?” asks Jack.

“Well, we need some flour” she replies

“Take a sickle and cut some wheat, then take it
to the mill; and the miller will make the flour”
Then, Jack cuts enough wheat, and takes it on
the donkey’s back to the miller.

“Can you help me?” He asked. “I need some

flour for a big pancake”

“Ok, look! First we

separate the grain from
the chaff” says the
miller.
He gives Jack a flail and
spreads the wheat onto
the ground. The miller
takes another flail and
begins to beat the wheat
with it. Jack helps with
the threshing and soon
there is a big pile of
straw and chaff and a
small pile of grain.
The miller puts the grain on a large flat stone.
On the top there is a round millstone
connected to the water wheel on the outside.
The water wheel turns round and round,
turning the millstone round and round, too, to
make the flour from the grain. At last the
miller gives Jack a bag of flour.

“Here is the flour” shouts Jack. “Let’s make a

pancake” but his mother says, “Wait! Now we
need an egg, go to the black hen and feed her,
please”

Then, Jack goes to the black hen and feeds her

some grain that he still has into his pocket
from the threshing.
“Cluck, cluck” says the black hen

and goes inside the hen house. Then she says:

“Cluck, cluck” once more and lays an egg.

“Here is an egg” shouts Jack. “Let’s make a

pancake” but his mother says, “Wait! Now we
need some milk, go to the spotted cow and milk
her, please”.
Then, Jack goes to the spotted cow and begins
to milk her.

“Moo, moo”

says the spotted cow as the milk gets out.

“Here’s the milk.” shouts Jack. “Let’s make a

pancake” but his mother says, “Wait! We need
some butter, get the butter churn and hold it
between your knees, please”.

Then, Jack gets the butter churn and holds it

between his knees. His mother gets some
cream from the top of the milk and puts it into
the butter churn. Jack pushes the churn
handle up and down, up and down. Finally, the
cream turns into butter.

“Here’s the butter” shouts Jack, “Let’s make a

pancake”. But his mother says, “Wait! We
need to build a fire, go for some firewood,
please”

Then, Jack goes to the woodshed and brings

some firewood.
“Here’s the firewood” shouts Jack, “Let’s
make a pancake”. But his mother says, “Wait!
What about having something sweet on your
pancake?”

So Jack goes down to the

cool cellar and pulls a jar
of strawberry jam from
one of the shelves.

“Here’s the strawberry jam” shouted Jack,

“Let’s make a pancake”.
In the kitchen, Jack’s mother fills the table
with the flour, the egg, the milk, the butter.
There is also a mixing bowl, a cup, a wooden
spoon, a ladle, a frying pan, a plate, a knife, a
fork, and a spoon. And a jar of strawberry jam.

And his mother says,

“Ok, Put a cupful of flour into the bowl…

Now, break an egg into the flour and stir…

Pour a cupful of milk

over the flour and egg
and stir again and
again until the butter
is smooth and
without bumps.”
After a minute or two
the underside of the
pancake is golden
brown. “Now watch,”
she says, “Let’s turn the
pancake over.
Ready?”
“Ready!!” Shouts Jack. “Flip,” says his
mother. The pancake goes up high into the air
and lands right in the pan!

One minute later, the pancake is crisp on the

underside as well. Then, she slips the pancake
from the frying pan onto the plate and spreads
some strawberry jam on it.

“And now, Jack” his mother starts to say, but

Jack interrupts…

“Wait, mama, I know what to do now!”
