AE 321 – Homework #9

Due: Wednesday April 24, 2019

Chapters 6 and 7

1. (a) Show that the stress function for the torsion of a long cylinder of solid triangular cross section
(shown below) subjected to a given torque T is given by:

(b) Find the stress, strain and displacement state for this bar assuming a homogeneous, isotropic
linear elastic solid (E and ν) and no body forces.

2. (Exam question) Bending moments My and Mz are applied to the rectangular bar shown below.
The bar is made up of a brittle linear elastic isotropic and homogeneous material with elastic
properties E, ν and failure strength σf.
(a) At what value of M (as a function of bar properties and dimensions) will failure occur if
My
Mz = ≡ M?
2
(b) If a=2b how tall must the bar be (i.e. how much is a) in order for it to sustain a given loading
of Mz = M y = M0 ?
3
(c) If the bar is loaded first with a moment of Mz = b σ f , how much moment My can be applied
before failure?
(d) Where and in which direction on the bar would failure occur in each case above?
