AE 321 – Homework #6

Due: Wednesday March 27, 2019

Material Behavior (Chapter 4) and MTIL Session

1. Data Analysis Question: This exercise is based on the laboratory demonstrations that you did
this past week. The homework is to be done individually by each student on their own. Data for
the tension tests of Al 7075-T6, Al 2024-T4, and 1045 steel have been made available at
http://mtil.illinois.edu/data/Courses/Spring_2019/AE321/Tension%20Testing/. In each session
there is one common file for the Al 2024-T4 experiment (conducted by the TA) that will be used
by everyone in that session. For the other two data sets please download the files corresponding
to your individual session (numbered by date and time, or section number and/or load frame
letter). The data from each test come in a file which first lists the parameters used in each
experiment followed by the data recorded. Details on the saved files can be found in this
directory: http://mtil.illinois.edu/data/_DataAnalysisHELP/.

Note: As there were some technical errors that occurred in some cases, if the data from your
group’s experiments are unusable, please download the files from one of the other groups’
experiments and clearly state the session and machine number that you will be using in the
homework.

Using the data you got in this way, please complete the following:
(a) Plot the uniaxial stress strain curve for each test:
(b) Identify (i.e., mark on your diagram) the following points in each of the curves:
Yield point
Point of onset of necking
Failure point
(c) What is the value of the following quantities in each case?
Proportional Limit
0.2% offset stress
UTS: ultimate tensile strength
Failure strain
(d) Calculate the modulus of elasticity (E) for Steel and Al (use each curve). Explain the details
of your calculation method.
(e) Calculate the final (plastic) strain in each case if the material is unloaded after 3% straining.
What is the new yield stress if the material is then reloaded to failure?
(f) What are the differences between the different types of Al?
(g) Look up the densities of each material. Calculate and compare the Specific Strengths of the
materials.

2. (a) Show that the principal axes for stress and strain coincide for a linearly elastic isotropic
material.
(b) Under what condition do the principal axes for stress and strain coincide for an orthotropic
solid?
