 Frictional force = µ × normal force,
F=μN

28. What is a wet clutch and how does work?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clutch
A wet clutch is immersed in a cooling lubricating fluid which is used to keep surfaces clean and provide better
performance and longer life. It has a number of plates called drive plates which are used to apply drive to the
vehicle. These drive plate has notches that fixed in the clutch basket. Discs slides and drive plates which are part
of the pressure plate assembly slides into the cage. Due to this, vehicle is in driven mode. Clutch basket is
connected to drive chain which is responsible drive the vehicle. Due to friction, this mechanism is soaked in oil.
The friction component of the oil is used in this clutch which allows the plates to slide for proper operation.

69. Describe the procedure for testing clutch dragging [failure to completely release].

First step to be taken is to start the engine and then depress the clutch pedal fully. Next step is to shift
the transmission into first gear and then keep the fully depressed clutch. Now shift the transmission to
neutral and just wait for approximate 5 sec for transmission to come a stop completely. Now it should be
shifted into reverse without pushing any force to shift lever. If gear clash sound is audible that means
clutch is now dragging.

70. Describe the procedure for testing clutch slippage.

Before testing clutch slippage, clutch pedal play should be checked. For this, ruler or measurement tape is to be
positioned next to the clutch pedal and end of the tape or ruler should rest on the floor of the vehicle. Now pedal
should be pushed by hand which is used to take out pedal slack. Pedal play is within range if it moves between one
or two inches. If there is little pedal play, then it should be manually adjusted. After this, for clutch slippage testing,
firstly safe place to be searched to park the vehicle and then parking brake is engaged. Engine should be started
and let it be idle. Then depress the clutch pedal fully to disengage the clutch. Transmission should be shifted into
third gear and accelerate the engine up to the 2000rpm and clutch should be slowly released to allow the clutch to
engage. Before stalling, if the engine runs for a few seconds that means clutch is partially slipping and if engine
continues to run after releasing the clutch pedal that means it is slipping. Finally, after releasing the clutch pedal
shut off the engine which is used to prevent damage to the flywheel or pressure plate.

71. Complete the following statement about replacing the clutch disc and pressure plate using the following
words.

Words: Alignment, Bearing, Bolts, Clutch, Direction, Flywheel, Height, Held, Inspected, Loosened, Marks,
Pressure, Procedures, Replaced, Surface, Tighten, Tool

1 Before disassembling the clutch, make sure _tools_________ marks are present on the pressure plate
and flywheel.
2 The attaching bolts should be _____loosened_____ before removing any of the bolts. With the bolts
loosened, support the assembly with one hand while using the other to remove the ________bolts__.
The clutch disc will be free to fall as the __pressure________ plate is separated from the flywheel. Keep
it intact with the pressure plate.
3 The surface of the pressure plate should be _______inspected___ for signs of burning, grooving,
warpage, and cracks. Any faults normally indicate that the plate should be __replaced________.

4 The surface of the flywheel should also be carefully inspected. Normally the ____flywheel______ surface
can be resurfaced to remove any defects. Also check the runout of the flywheel. The pilot bushing or
bearing should also be inspected.
5 The new ____clutch______ disc is placed into the pressure plate as the pressure plate is moved into its
proper location. Make sure the disc is facing the correct __alignment________. Most are marked to
indicate which side should be seated against the flywheel __surface________.
6 Install the pressure plate according to the alignment __direction________ made during disassembly.
Then install the clutch alignment __procedures________ through the hub of the disc and the pilot
____held______ to centre the disc on the flywheel.
7 Install the attaching bolts, but do not ____marks______.
8 With the disc aligned, tighten the attaching bolts according to the ____bearing______ outlined in the
service information and check the release finger/ lever __height________ after tightening the bolts. In
most cases, the flywheel will need to be ___tighten______ in order to tighten the bolts.

72. Consider the various post repair checks that you would make during a road test on the vehicle clutch system?
First step to be taken is to start the engine and then depress the clutch pedal fully. Next step is to shift the
transmission into first gear and then keep the fully depressed clutch. Now shift the transmission to neutral and just
wait for approximate 5 sec for transmission to come a stop completely. Now it should be shifted into reverse without
pushing any force to shift lever. If gear clash sound is audible that means clutch is now dragging.
