Results/Re- ● The Assessor will grade the assessment and record the result on the front page of
assessment this document (S) – Satisfactory if all observable behaviours are correct and (NS)
not satisfactory if any areas are left incorrect
● Feedback will be provided on either result
● Where a student receives a ‘NS – Not Satisfactory’ result, the assessor will discuss
the area of the non-compliant observable behaviour and an opportunity given for re-
assessment. This may be through direct observation or a different method of
assessment e.g. verbal/oral questioning, problem solving exercise.
● If the outcome is again not satisfactory the student result will be deemed (NYC) not
yet competent. Additional feedback will be given, and a time agreed upon for further
assessment after additional training and skills practice has taken place, this
information will be recorded, dated and signed in the re-assessment area on the
last page of this document
● Where all the assessment tasks have been graded (S) Satisfactory, the student will
be deemed C – Competent for the practical component and the result recorded and
signed in the area indicated on the last page of this document
Reasonable If the participant is unable to undertake the written assessment as designed, an interview

Written Assessment
1. Identify five (5) important items of personal safety when working on clutch systems in an automotive
workplace?
4 Sturdy Shoes
1 Set the jack properly in the jack point. If it is not properly positioned, it will damage the
vehicle or can cause personal injury
To hold the vehicle in air, so anyone can work underneath the vehicle.
1 Vehicle should be centered at hoist which means weight should be evenly distributed to the front and
rear.

Place a transmission jack under the transmission and ______secure____ the transmission to it. Then loosen
and remove the lower bell housing-to-engine block bolts and the cross member at the
_transmission_________. After the mount is free from the transmission, ____lower______ the transmission
slightly so you can easily access the top transmission-to-engine bolts. ___loosen_______ and remove the
remaining transmission-to-engine bolts. _slowly_________ and carefully move the transmission away from
the ____engine______ until the input shaft is out of the clutch assembly. Then slowly lower the transmission.
Once the transmission is out of the __vehicle________, carefully move it to the work area and mount it to a
stand or bench. On some cars, the engine and transmission must be removed as a unit. The
___assembly_______ is lifted with an engine hoist or lowered underneath the car.
True or False question
7. Most often the engine and powertrain in a FWD vehicle is removed through the bottom of the vehicle. Special
tools may be required to hold the transaxle and/or engine in place as it is being disconnected from the vehicle

8. What three (3) practical methods of reducing the spread of asbestos should be followed in the workplace?
1 Consultation and Training: People who are working must receive all necessary training and it
should be supervised and documented.
2 Asbestos work area: This area should be isolated and barriers and warning signs should be used
to warn other people.
3 Personal protective equipment (PPE): It is used to prevent the contamination of clothing and
provide protection.
9. When handling, trapping, storing and disposing of new or waste hydraulic fluid, which document should you
use to find this information?
To store hydraulic waste, first we have to collect all waste oils and labelled them drums and store
in a undercover area. If waste fluid is stored in double skinned tank then no need for bunding
them. If there is any need of disposing a waste fluid, waste oils can be used in recycling process.
For recycling any type of waste oil can be used such as gear lubricant, hydraulic oil etc. It can be
anti freezed which can be further used for recycling.

The pressure plate and __flywheel________ are the drive or input members of the assembly. The
clutch__________ disc, also called the friction disc, is the driven or output __member________ and is
connected to the transmission’s input shaft. As long as the clutch is __disengaged________ (clutch pedal
depressed), the drive members turn independently of the driven member, and the _engine_________ is
disconnected from the transmission. However, when the clutch is engaged (clutch pedal released), the
_________pressure_ plate moves toward the flywheel and the clutch ___disc_______ is squeezed between
the two revolving ___drive_______ members and forced to turn at the same speed.
16. What is the coefficient of friction?
Coefficient of fraction is defined as the measurement of amount of friction which exists between the two
surfaces. It is mathematically defined as the ratio of frictional force to the normal force. It is expressed as:
µ= Frictional Force (F)/Normal force(N)
Frictional force = µ × normal force,
F=μN

69. Describe the procedure for testing clutch dragging [failure to completely release].
First step to be taken is to start the engine and then depress the clutch pedal fully. Next step is to shift
the transmission into first gear and then keep the fully depressed clutch. Now shift the transmission to
neutral and just wait for approximate 5 sec for transmission to come a stop completely. Now it should be
shifted into reverse without pushing any force to shift lever. If gear clash sound is audible that means
clutch is now dragging.

1 Before disassembling the clutch, make sure _tools_________ marks are present on the pressure plate
and flywheel.
2 The attaching bolts should be _____loosened_____ before removing any of the bolts. With the bolts
loosened, support the assembly with one hand while using the other to remove the ________bolts__.
The clutch disc will be free to fall as the __pressure________ plate is separated from the flywheel. Keep
it intact with the pressure plate.
3 The surface of the pressure plate should be _______inspected___ for signs of burning, grooving,
warpage, and cracks. Any faults normally indicate that the plate should be __replaced________.

4 The surface of the flywheel should also be carefully inspected. Normally the ____flywheel______ surface
can be resurfaced to remove any defects. Also check the runout of the flywheel. The pilot bushing or
bearing should also be inspected.
5 The new ____clutch______ disc is placed into the pressure plate as the pressure plate is moved into its
proper location. Make sure the disc is facing the correct __alignment________. Most are marked to
indicate which side should be seated against the flywheel __surface________.
6 Install the pressure plate according to the alignment __direction________ made during disassembly.
Then install the clutch alignment __procedures________ through the hub of the disc and the pilot
____held______ to centre the disc on the flywheel.
7 Install the attaching bolts, but do not ____marks______.
8 With the disc aligned, tighten the attaching bolts according to the ____bearing______ outlined in the
service information and check the release finger/ lever __height________ after tightening the bolts. In
most cases, the flywheel will need to be ___tighten______ in order to tighten the bolts.
