How Do The Supplies Our

School Buys Contribute To

The Environment?

Once upon a time, Kiera’s cousin Forrest went on a camping trip. They were going
to go white-water rafting, but across the river, the forest was on fire, so they were
forced to evacuate. That is an example of climate change. Another example of
climate change is everyday products that we buy that actually harm the
environment.
Our Research Question:
Are the supplies that our school is using contributing to environmental waste?
Climate Change Connection:
Our topic connects to the core concept of waste and reducing waste. It is a cycle,
because it is a repetition of what happens to trash.
Research Methods:
1. We made a list of supplies that our school often uses
2. We looked at the different brands that we use
3. Look at the environmental impacts of the different products
Items We Use With Bad Environmental Impact:
● Expo Markers

Contains chemical (called Xylene) which irritates skin and is absorbed into
your bloodstream when inhaled and can cause headaches, dizziness and
nausea. Also, the markers do not recycle.

● Ticonderoga pencils

Are made with a wood called jelutong, which comes from rainforest trees. The
company has been accused of harming the rainforest.

● Disinfecting wipes

Pose a danger for animals that might think wipes and plastic bags are
jellyfish, which they naturally eat.
Alternative Items We Can Use
● Sprout pencils are sustainable by the seed that is planter in a capsule instead
of an eraser, so you can plant the pencil after you’ve used it.
● Green Works cleaning wipes are compostable and don’t spread around
harmful chemicals.
● AusPen whiteboard markers are cheaper, are refillable, and don’t contain any
harmful chemicals.
