In relation to gene, what is gene therapy?
Gene therapy is the use of genetic modification to treat human disease.
Gene therapy is the introduction, removal or change in genetic material, into the cell of a patient
to repair or change a gene to treat specific disease.
Gene therapy was conceptualized in 1972. But in the 1980s, it gained a lot of commercial
interest. The first attempt, was performed by Martin Cline on 1980. The first approved gene
therapy clinical research in the US took place on 1990, at the National Institutes of Health (NIH),
under the direction of William French Anderson.
The 4 main classes of viral vectors are Adenoviruses, Adeno-associated viruses (AAVs),
Retroviruses and Lentiviruses
