Fluoroscopy Guidelines & Errors

Fluoroscopy can be performed by depressing a foot pedal. It is only allowed if the cassette tray is in the parked position, even if no cassette is inserted. To minimize delay between exposures and fluoroscopy, the fluoro foot pedal should be depressed before releasing the exposure pushbutton. During fluoroscopy, the image will remain centered on the monitor if the incidence fulcrum is at the level of the organ being examined.

10 FLUOROSCOPY

WARNING:

It is a good practice that the operator uses the following precautions when releasing a
radiographic exposure:

a. Keep the maximum focus to skin distance compatible with the clinical examination in
order to minimise the dose received by the patient.

b. Always consider the potential negative effects of any material that is present in the X-ray
field.

Fluoroscopy can be executed by depressing the foot-pedal.

Fluoroscopy is allowed only if the cassette tray is in its parking position, even if no cassette has been
inserted in the spot film device.

The fluoroscopy command is subordinated to the exposure command, then in order to minimise the
delay during the switching between exposure/fluoroscopy it is suggested to depress the fluoro foot-
pedal before releasing the exposure pushbutton.

10.1 PARALLAX ERROR DURING FLUOROSCOPY.

During an incidence movement, the fluoroscopic image remains centred in the TV monitor only if the
incidence fulcrum remains at the organ’s level.
So, theoretically, it should be necessary to modify the incidence fulcrum each time the organ under
examination has changed.
Anyway a long practice demonstrates that for a fulcrum height of about 10 cm, the image movement on
the TV monitor is acceptable; It is suggested to set the fulcrum height at 10 cm and modify this value
only if needed during particular procedures or in tomography mode.

10.2 FLUOROSCOPY DURING TUBE ANGULATION.

If the beam is not angled in respect to the selected image receptor, the beam format corresponds with
the receptor’s one.

WARNING:

In case the beam incidence is greater than 10° the irradiated area automatically set by the
collimator is greater than the Image receptor more than the allowed tolerance.

In this case the operator, under his responsability, can still release the fluoroscopic exposure in
case the procedure requires it. In the same time a sound alarm is activated to drive the
operator’s attention to the necessity to limit as much as possible the use of this feature
