Exercise Interventions for the Elbow and Forearm

Combined Pulling Motions ~ Pulling a variety of weighted objects with one or both arms, emphasizing
elbow flexion and proper body mechanics.
Elbow flexors are used in pulling, lifting, and carrying activities in open- and closed-chain activities.
These upper extremity actions also require strength of the scapular retractors, shoulder extensors, and Combined Pushing Motions
wrist and hand musculature. Suggestion exercise are:
The triceps muscle is involved in pushing motions. Pushing also involves variations of shoulder flexion and
scapular protraction or depression so that muscles controlling these motions are functioning with the
triceps. Suggestions include:

Bilateral pull-ups against elastic resistance (Fig. 18.17).

Military press-up

Closed-chain chin-ups or modified pull-ups on an

over- head bar
Bench press.

Unilateral combined pulling pattern simulating

starting a lawn mower (Fig. 18.19) or bilateral or
unilateral rowing motions, such as using a rowing
machine. Upper extremity ergometry (see Fig. 6.54).
