Community health nurses are instrumental in health education as they spend most of their time working

with the local population. Health teaching or health education enables people in the community to identify
the cause of common health problems and provides practical solutions to the disease.

We can also see in the picture where one of my groupmates is visiting the house of our assigned pregnant
woman last semester. House visit allows community health nurse to asses the home and family order to
provide the necessary nursing care and health related activities. The purpose of the home visit should be
clear, regular and flexible according to the needs of the family.

A primary role of the community health nurse is to work in partnership with community agencies and
population groups to reduce health risks and promote health. Appropriate and adequate nutrition is a
cornerstone of good health. So last year we held an health education about nutrition and proper diet in our
assigned community, we talked about eating right and the types of foods they should and should not eat
and alternatives food that available to their community. After this we conducted a feeding program for the
children and workshop for the parents on how to cook healthy foods that is appropriate to their family.

As shown in the collage that our group made, we show the concept of “Community Health Nursing” in a
figurative symbol of a heart. A heart, a symbol of love and genuinity. CHN encompasses the 6C’s of
nursing namely care, compassion, courage, communication, commitment and competence. These 6C’s of
nursing transcends towards the actions and provisions of a CHN. This is essential to the overall perspective
that portrays the nurse in his/her actions towards the goal of promoting healthy lifestyle, prevent disease
and health problems, provide direct care, educate community about managing chronic conditions and
making healthy choices, evaluate a community’s delivery of patient care and wellness projects; Institute
health and wellness programs and conduct research to improve healthcare towards the nurses’ respective
community. We envisioned CHN as a double edged sword, because working as a community health nurse
is an excellent way to combine a love of nursing and a love of your community. A way of giving back to the
community as well as transpiring to continue to promote health in the profession. A quote by Lillian Wald
states that “Nursing is love in action and there is no finer manifestation of it than the care of the poor and
disabled in their own homes”. The quote portrays that providing these actions as a nurse encompasses the
overall generality of love towards its people, the profession and the service.
