Irrational Persuasion

There are several techniques employed that may be persuasive in getting someone to
accept the conclusion of an argument, but are often irrationally employed. They are
irrational because one accepts the conclusion not because of reasons, but for some
other reason (e.g., emotion).

and manipulating customers with misleading nutritional claims about its baby milk
formulas.

Nestle's critics had alleged that the company's advertising created a market for a
product by creating a need that did not previously exist and did so without properly
educating people in ways of avoiding harmful practices. For example, Carl Taylor, head
of the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins University School of
Hygiene and Public Health, alleged that massive advertising of infant formula in Arab
countries is causally associated with a decline in breastfeeding, to the extent that only
15 percent of mothers are nursing their babies at 3 months of age.
