for
Preparation of Rigid Pavement Design Guidelines

1 Background

The road pavement is the actual surface which resists the wheel load while in motion as well as in stationary.
Structurally, pavement surface is aimed at transferring wheel load to the underlying sub-grade i. e natural soil as
well as creating the surface for adequate resistance for the vehicular movement. In addition to this, it is
supposed to bear the weathering forces of nature mainly temperature differences. Therefore, pavement is
designed for the moving wheel loads, and for natural stresses such as temperature. Further, the pavement
structure greatly depends on the sub-grade soil properties.

In this way, pavement design methods can be divided into two following categories:

 Mechanistic approaches

 Empirical approaches

The pavement is very responsible as the structural element for the better performances of road transport
system. In terms of investment, the cost of pavement is much higher than earthwork or other structures to be
built in the road project. Therefore, the design of pavement structure is a responsible task for the concerned
authorities. In this context, DoR has developed a Guidelines for the design of flexible pavement has been
approved in 2071. However, deign document on rigid pavement doesn't exists.

Rigid pavements work better than the flexible pavements in terms of load carrying capacity and surface
structures. Further, it has very low operational as well as maintenance cost. However, initial investment is higher
and does not allow the stage construction. It is rational to construct for heavy traffic and weak sub-grade soil
condition.

In this context, Department of Road intends to prepare 'Pavement Design Guidelines (Rigid pavement)'. The
proposed guidelines is supposed to accommodate the different topographical as well as climate specific
conditions of Nepal.

2 Objective of Service

The main objective of the service is to prepare "Rigid Pavement Design Guideline ".

3 Scope of Service

The scope of work to be carried out shall include but may not be limited to the following:

o To study of pavement design methods (rigid pavement) in Nepal and other countries. And, interaction/
focused group discussion with exert in the field of pavement design.
o To develop the design criteria for rigid pavement.

1
o To develop guidelines for pavement material including sub-grade regarding their testing, assessment,
evaluation and minimum technical specification.
o To elaborate the traffic loading for the design of rigid pavement.
o Finally, to submit a "Rigid Pavement Design Guideline "
