PREFACE
To equip the students with skills required to synthesize comprehensively the
knowledge gained during course works for a practical application of civil engineering
discipline in real life, under the supervision and guidance of member/members of
faculty, which provides opportunities for tackling problem to civil Engineering, there
is a provision of project work in the syllabus of TU,IOE on the 7 th & 8th semester of
bachelors degree program. This project entitled Pre-feasibility study and design on
Mardi Hydropower Project is the one prepared by a group of four students in partial
fulfillment of the requirement for the bachelors degree in civil engineering.
Nepal is blessed with a huge hydropower generation potential. A very small
fraction of its potential is utilized to date. And even in the next twenty or thirty years,
Nepal's electricity need will be meet by a small percentage of its potential.
Hydropower potential of Nepal can thus be harnessed for mutual benefits of the
countries in the region, particularly India and Bangladesh where there is demand for
such power.

The demand is increasing by 10% per annum; however, it is suppressed due to

limited supply. With the adequate supply of power, the demand for industrial and
commercial use is expected to grow rapidly. Rapid growth of industrial
establishments and increasing electrification require more supply of power in future.
Therefore , there is enough demand for hydropower energy and hence, there is a great
scope of developing hydropower projects in Nepal.

In order to complete this project, the period of two semester inclusive of the regular
classes and timely assessments is required. However every effort has been made to
collect the most reliable data, past reports and relevant design information.

Three days field visit of the site was also made to determine the suitability of the site
location, geological investigation ,survey and topographic features. We prepared a
model of Seti hydropower in second year which gives basic knowledge of various
hydropower components and encourage us to choose hydropower project in final
year. For the search of more information we recently visit the Fewa-Seti hydropower
(1.5 mw) and Gandaki hydro (3.2 mw).

This study include the hydro-meteorological analysis, preliminary study about the
geology of the area, detailed design of each component of the hydropower, electro-
mechanical equipment selection and cost benefit analysis. We feel that hydropower
project is really challenging one, we will be happy to receive comments and
suggestions in this endeavor.
