1. Subject Purpose
The purpose of this subject is to provide students with knowledge on the most commonly used
herbs in western herbal medicine.
The subject addresses, for each herb, its classification, background, active constituents, medicinal
uses and actions, formulations and modes of administration, cautions and potential herb/ drug
interactions associated with use.
This subject partially achieves the following national units of competency:

4. Subject Workload
To be successful in this subject, you are expected to engage in a range of activities such as attending
classes, reading and research, applying your skills and knowledge in a workplace or simulated
environment, participating in team activities or project based work, or interacting with others face-to-
face or using eLearn, CIT’s online campus.

Classroom time is 3 hours per week. You are expected to undertake approx the same amount of time
again per week in study.

5. Assessment

Assessment strategy
Assessment of competence may be via a range of pathways to accommodate different learner needs
and circumstances. For example, oral presentations, visual displays or role-plays may be used as
alternatives to formal essays. The rigour applied will be the same, regardless of the mode of
assessment, so as to ensure competency/ learning outcomes have been clearly demonstrated.

Your assessment will reflect the contexts and situations in which you may find yourself working. All
CIT Vocational Education and Training (VET) assessment is criterion referenced. Any changes to the
assessment will be provided to you in writing.

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Assessment Task 1 – Materia Medica Assignment
During this subject 34 new herbs will be covered (including 8 scheduled/ restricted herbs). Each
student will be expected to produce a materia medica assignment on three (3) herbs from the list of
non-scheduled herbs and deliver a presentation on each of these herbs to the class.

The assignments are to be written in standard materia medica format and presented to the class in
an allocated week. These need to be photocopied and handed out to other class members – or
emailed to the teacher at least two days before class so students can access the file(s) from elearn.
The assignments need to be laid out in an easy to understand, clear, legible and logical format as
they will form the basis for your clinical Materia Medica (see Appendix for a materia medica
template detailing categories to be covered).

Research for these materia medica assignments must include information from at least 6 reliable
herbal sources (herbal texts/ professional journals) and have put some thought and effort into
compiling a concise and usable reference tool. DO NOT copy and paste from your sources. You
are expected to read, understand, and reproduce the fruits of your study in your own words.

All assignments must also be fully referenced, Harvard style.

Assessment Task 2 – End Semester Exam


There will be a single exam at the end of the semester that will assess Learning Outcomes 1 and 2.
The exam will consist of short, medium and longer length answers, including case studies.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Assessment Task 3 – Materia Medica Summary Sheet
Students are expected to complete a summary sheet of the herbs studied using the summary sheet
template in the Appendix. Students must provide information under all headings listed, and can
extend the table as desired. This will assist in learning the herbs presented more thoroughly, as well
as providing a good study and (future) clinical guide.

This assignment is due in Class 15 (21 November), and is ungraded. You can either email the
teacher your summary sheet or bring it to class.
Assessment Task 4 – Class Tutorials
Students will be expected to pre-read and prepare for classes and will be expected to contribute to
class tutorials and case studies. Students will be formatively assessed on their contribution. At least
80% attendance of classes will be expected for this module.
