WASHERS. cama! ASME B18.22.1 1965 PLAIN WASHERS (R 1998) IFI NOTES: 1. ASME B18.22.1 is a standard developed through the procedures of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers. B18.22.1 is under the jurisdiction of ASME Standards Committee B18, and is the di- rect responsibility of its Subcommittee 22. 2. The latest edition of B18.22.1 was published in 1965 and at that time was designated ANSI B27.2. In 1975 the standard was reaf- firmed and reissued with its new designation B18.22.1. In 1998 the standard was again reaffirmed without any change in technical content of the 1965 edition. .. IFl endorses the recommendation of B18.22.1 that when selecting Type A washers, priority consideration be given to the preferred washer sizes detailed in Table 1A. 1. ASME B18.22.1-1965 (R 1998) is reprinted with the permission of its publisher, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Three Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016-5990, U.S.A. 4. INTRODUCTORY NOTES torquing. It is intended that these series desig- nations should be discontinued and that the washers should be identified by their nominal dimensions. Washer selection should be made preferably from the preferred sizes shown in 14 Scope 4.1.4 This standard covers two types of gen- eral purpose plain washers designated as Type Aand Type B. 4.1.2. The inclusion of dimensional data in this standard is not intended to imply that all of the products described herein are production items Consumers are requested to consult with manu- facturers concerning lists of stock production sizes. 1.2 Types of Washers 1.24 Type A. The Type A plain washers were originally developed in a light, medium, heavy, and extra heavy series with proportions that were related to the dimensions of bolt heads and nuts principally to minimize embedding and to aid Table 1A. In the event the desired Type A washer is not listed in Table 1A, reference may be made to Table 1B, 4.2.2 Type B. The Type B plain washers are available in a narrow, regular and wide series with proportions designed to fulfil the custom ary purpose of distributing load over larger ar- eas of lower strength materials. Suitable washer selection can be made by referring in Table 2 to the nominal screw or bolt size and selecting the appropriate width series for the application, 4.3. Dimensions All dimensions in this standard are given in inches, unless otherwise stated ( © 2003 Industrial Fasteners Institute PLAIN WASHERS 1965 ASME B18.22.1 | (R 1998) 1.4 Materials 4.4.1 Plain washers shall be made of ferrous or nonferrous metal, plastic or other material as specified. The tolerances indicated in the tables _are intended for metal washers only. (IF Note: ASTM F844, page L-20, covers chemical and mechanical properties of un- hardened steel washers.) 4.4.2 If hardened washers are required, they are available as a stamped product without break. or gap and as a flat coiled product with gap narrow enough to prevent tangling. Suitable mechanical properties for hardened stamped plain washers are covered by ASTM F436, page L+24. Applicable properties for plain washers coiled from wire shall be AISI 1060 steel, or equivalent, heat treated to a hardness of Rock- well C45 to 53. % 1.5 Quality Washers shall be free from burrs, loose scale, sharp edges and all other defects that might affect their serviceability. 1.6 Terminology For definitions of terms relating to wash- ers or features thereof used in this standard, refer to ASME B18.12, page N-1 © 2008 Industrial Fasteners institute ) ASME B18.22.4 1965 (R 1998) PLAIN WASHERS aa, WASHERS A, Table 1A Dimensions of Preferred Sizes of Type A Plain Washers Nominal Washer a c Tide Diam ‘Outside Diameter Thickness, Tolerance, Tolerance, Plus Basie Pius Dore 0.084 0.125 0.156 0.000 0.000 0.008 0.008 0.005 0.005 0.005 0.005 ods 0.250 oat 0376 0.000 0.000 0.008 0.015 ‘0.006 0.005 ‘0.005 0.005 0.188 0218 0.250 0.250 0.008 0.002 0015 0.015 0.005 005 0.005 0.005 0.438 0.500 0.562 0.562 0.015 0.015 0.015 0.015 0.005 0.005 0.005 0.005 0281 ost ot 0275 0015 0015 0015 0.015 0.005 ‘0.005 0.005 0.005 0.625 0734 0.688 0.875 0.015 0.015 0015 0.030 0.005 007 007 0.007 zsz2|sz=2| 0.408 0.438 0.489 0.500 0.015 0.015 0.015 0.015 0.005 0.005 0.005 0.005 siz 4.000 oz 4.250 0.015 0.090 0085 0.030 ‘0.007 0.007 0.007 0.007 0881 0.562 0.584 0625 0.015 0015 0015 0.015 0.005 008 ‘0.008 0.005 1.062 1375 3186 1469 0.030 0.080 0.030 0.030 (0.007 0.007 0.007 0.007 0.656 688 oat oer 0.080 0.030 0.030 0.030 7312 4.750 4469 2.000 0.030 0.030 0.030 ‘0007 0.007 007 0.007 0.38 0938 4.082 4.062 0.030 0.030 0.030 0.030 3780 2250 2.000 2.500 ‘0.007 007 007 007 1.250 4250 4375 4375 0.080 0.030 0.030 0.030 2.250 2750 2.500 3.000 ‘0007 007 0.007 0.007 s2<2|s22|s2e2|s2s2|s2s2 7500 41500 4.605 1.625 0.030 0.045 0.030 0.045 72.760 3.260 3.000 3.500 ‘0.007 oo10 007 oo10 4750 4875 2.000 2125 0.045 0.045 0.045 0.045 3.750 4.000 4.250 4500 ‘0.010 oo10 ‘oot 010 2375 2625 2a75 3125 0.048 0.045 0.085 0.065 4.750 5.000 5.250 5.500 ‘0.010 oo10 010 0.010 4 (1) Preferred sizes are forthe most part from series previously designated "Standard Plate" and “SAE.” Where common sizes existed in the two series, tho SAE size is designated "N” (narrow) and the ‘Standard Plate "W" (wide).
