BEYOND THE CLASSROOM!

INSPIRING TIPS FOR ADAPTATION

SAMPLE 1

Adaptation tip: Start the lesson doing a game to generate interest and engage your learners.

1. Pre-teach any new words form the box. Write the words on the board and ask a student
to mime one of them. The other students guess the word. They take turns until all the
vocabulary is covered.
2. Check students understanding and work on pronunciation by drilling the words.
3. Have students play the game: Word race.
Teacher draws the chart on the board. The class is split into teams and they are given a
marker. T. says a word and student from each team must run and classify it in the
corresponding column.
SAMPLE 2

Adaptation tip: Help students build confidence.

1. Ask students to work individually in the reading tasks and then compare answers
with a peer before checking them as a whole class.

2. Ask volunteers to share their answers once they have confirmed them with a
partner.
SAMPLE 3

Adaptation tip: Guide your students through language discovery.

Do not explain the grammar aspect. Use the questions in the LANGUAGE TASKS section
to help your students discover how to use “can” focusing on the meaning, form and use.

SAMPLE 4

Adaptation tip: Suit your learners’ needs

1. Plan some other type of practice exercise if you consider this exercise will not be
enough for your students.
2. Think of an exercise that keeps the lesson frame. Do not use isolated sentences,
keep students using language for the same topic and direct them to reach the lesson
aim.
SAMPLE 5

Adaptation tip: Promote integration of language skills.

1. Tell students they are going to have a sport club fair at school
2. Have students work in small groups to create the poster.
3. Create a carrouselwalk:
a. Ask students to paste their posters around the classroom and have them take
turns to explain the poster / visit other posters.
b. All students have to both present and hear their partners presentations.
c. Have students vote for the best sport club in the class.
d. Give a “prize” to the number 1 sport club according to the number of votes it got.
4. Monitor students while presenting and pick up both good uses of the target language
(can) and common mistakes.
5. Praise the class for the good job done and lead a whole group correction.
SAMPLE 6

Adaptation tip: Validate feedback given.

1. Look for material or plan some extra-practice activities to help students improve on
the areas they need.

2. Choose suitable tasks or adapt them from the suggested resources in the self-study
guide.

3. If possible, plan a lesson in the computers’ lab or have students using tablets if you
have them at school and give them specific tasks/ activities for reinforcement on the
Internet.

4. Use formative assessment tools to stimulate interest and have students

strengthening their areas for improvement. ( Quizziz, Kahoot, etc.)
