BEYOND THE CLASSROOM!
DESIGNING ACTIVITIES TO HELP LEARNERS DISCOVER HOW LANGUAGE WORKS
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROJECT TASK 2A

During this week, you and your group will work on sections 7 and 10 of the English self-study
guide. If in doubt about these sections, please revise the self- study guide sections document.

This document will provide you with the step-by-step instructions to carry on this week’s
planning task.

SECTION 7 (ACTIVITIES)

LANGUAGE TASKS: This is an example of a language task you can design for your
self-study guide

a) Based on the activity of the receptive skill ( listening or reading) you selected for your
self-study guide, your first task is to decide the type of language awareness task or
concept questions1 you would like to include.

Examples of Concept Questions you can include in your self-study guide to help learners
“discover how English works”

● Yes/No questions:
Is it happening now? Yes
1
Find additional information at the end of this document.
● Multiple choice questions:
The statement refers to an action in…
a.the present b. the past c. the future

● Choice or 50/50 chance question:

Does the statement express ability or recommendation?

● Gap-filling statements:
In the statement “My sister can ride a bike”, the word before the action is _______

● Information questions:
In the statement “My sister can ride a bike”, what’s the verb form?

b) Create at least three (3) concept questions that refer to meaning, form and use of the
target language in your self-study guide.

c) Create a practice activity for the target language. Remember that these activities
provide students with reinforcement of the target language through controlled practice
activities with a focus on accuracy rather than fluency. Loot at this example.

Some examples of controlled practice activities are:

● Unscrambling ● Completing sentences or filling in gaps
● Multiple choice ● Ticking
● Identify mistakes ● Underlining
● True-False ● Circling words

Since the practice task is connected to language awareness, the practice task should not
take longer than 10 minutes.

SECTION 10 (ANSWER KEY)

d) Update the answer key by adding the responses to the new questions or tasks created
(Language Awareness and Practice Task)
Remember:

Self-assess your work before submitting it. Do so by

evaluating if this part of the self-study guide meets the
following checklist items: 7, 8, 9, and 16. Your tutor will
give 25 points for every checklist item that meets the
criteria without any further comments.

Just like in Project Task 1, you will need to open the editable checklist file and locate
the specific items you will need to assess, read the descriptors previously mentioned
and once the whole group is sure the guide meets the criteria in the checklist, the
group leader must submit both the link to the guide and completed checklist.
