    are you given?

    Structure and Form:


    Is it immediately obvious?
    How do you identify it?
    Mention keys,
    modulations. Try and do a
    diagram. What might you
    expect this to be, even if it
    is not? Are there repeating
    motifs?

    Harmony:
    The main keys will help
    define structure above, but
    are there particular
    chromatic notes,
    diminished, dominant
    7ths?
    Texture:
    Use musical terminology,
    canonic, imitative,
    counterpoint etc.
    Monophony etc. but also
    thick, thin etc.

    Melody; rhythm and


    articulation:
    Conjunct/disjunct,
    syncopation,
    simple/compound?
    Staccato, legato? Accents?
    Improvisation?

    Tone colour and


    instrumentation:
    What ensemble? Overall
    effect? Metallic? Brassy?
    Hazy? Solo or group?

    Context:
    Having analysed this
    piece, can you add
    anything?
    Function? Role of
    composer/performer
    Can you compare this to
    anything you know?

    NB: Make sure as you listen you get at least 1 or 2 points in EACH box above. Don’t concentrate on just 1 or 2
    boxes. Move on as soon as you can.
