Highlight the appropriate age group:    1 year old              2 year old

Objective: Children will identify temperature (cold to warm) and texture (firm to soft) as they

mix colors of Rainbow Stew together with their hands.

Materials

 One recipe of Rainbow Stew, divided into three colors (red, yellow, blue) cooled in the

refrigerator

 Sandwich baggies with zipping closure

Scaffolding: Children will be able to squeeze the different colored mixtures with their hands.

Some of the children are able to identify primary and secondary colors.

Facilitation: The caregiver will prepare the Rainbow Stew prior to the activity. At a table, the

caregiver will set out the bowls of Rainbow Stew, baggies, and spoons. She will then invite

children to watch her put two colors of Rainbow Stew in a bag and zip it closed. She will then

hold it out for them to watch her squish it as it mixes together to make a new color. Next, she

will provide opportunities for the children to spoon out their own color choice of Rainbow Stew

and put it into their baggy and assist them as needed. She will encourage the naming of colors

by the children and also talk about the temperature of the Rainbow Stew, asking the children

questions about it going from cold to warm and firm to soft as it is handled.

DAP support: p. 96 “Toddlers are surrounded by sensory objects for their play activities. To a

reasonable extent, they also can enjoy sensory play during routines such as hand washing.”

Materials

 Balls for kicking.

Scaffolding:  Children will expand their walking and running abilities as they practice kicking a

ball.

Facilitation: During outside play time, the caregiver will provide balls for children to play with.

She will offer encouragement and assistance as children kick and play with the balls.

Highlight the appropriate age group:    1 year old              2 year old

Objective: Children will learn vocabulary about their five senses.

Materials

 David Smells!: A Diaper David Book by David Shannon

Scaffolding:  The children are able to identify their eyes, ears, mouth, and nose and fingers.

Facilitation: The caregiver will invite the children to read a story. She will talk about the cover

of the book, turning pages, and the back of the book. She will ask questions about what the book

may be about and read the book in an animated, engaging way and invite children participation.

The book presents the five senses. She will encourage students to repeat words like see, hear,

taste, touch and smell.

DAP support: p. 92 “Caregivers frequently read to toddlers – to one child individually or to

groups of two or three – always in close physical contact. Caregivers sing with toddlers, do

finger plays, and act out simple stories or folktales, with children participating actively.”

Materials

 Sink with warm water

Scaffolding:  Prior knowledge would include being able to walk and turn the water on at the

sink.

in washing hands, prompting the correct steps. The caregiver will praise the children as they

successfully learn this important health self-help skill.

DAP support: p. 105 “Caregivers follow health and safety procedures, including proper hand

washing methods and universal precautions to limit the spread of infectious diseases. There are

clearly written sanitation procedures specific to each task or routine to help staff remember to
