SECTION02 MATHEMATICAL REASONING

16. The number of votes not cast for the Praja Party increased by
25% in the National General Election over those not cast for
it in the previous Assembly Polls, and the Praja Party lost by
a majority twice as large as that by which it had won the
Assembly Polls. If a total 2,60,000 people voted each time.
How many voted for the Praja Party in the Assembly
Elections.
(A) 1,10,000 (B) 1,50,000
(C) 1,40,000 (D) 1,20,000
Ans: C
Let x be the number of votes not cast for Praja Party in the
previous polls. So the number of votes not cast for the party
in this assembly polls would be 1.25x.
Margin of victory in the previous polls
= (Votes cast) – (Votes not cast)
= (260000 – x) – x = (260000 – 2x).
Margin of loss in this years polls
= 1.25x – (260000 – 1.25x)
= (2.5x – 260000).
As per the given information, margin of loss this year = 2 ×
Margin of victory last year.
Therefore,(2.5x–260000)=2(260000–2x).
7
x = 120000.
So the number of votes cast for the party in assembly election
= 260000 – 120000
= 140000.

17. One man can do as much work in one day as a woman can
do in 2 days. A child does one third the work in a day as a
woman. If an estate-owner hires 39 pairs of hands, men,
women and children in the ratio 6: 5: 2 and pays them in all
Rs. 1113 at the end of the days work. What must the daily
wages of a child be, if the wages are proportional to the
amount of work done?
(A) Rs.14 (B) Rs.5
(C) Rs.20 (D) Rs.7
Ans: D
There are 18 men, 15 women and 6 children.
Working efficiency of man : woman : child = 6 : 3 : 1. So the
ratio of the work done in a day by 18 men, 15 women and 6
children = (18 × 6) : (15 × 3) : (6 ×1) = 108 : 45 : 6. Hence,
the daily wage of Rs.1113 should be divided in this ratio. That
makes it, Rs.756 for men, Rs.315 for women and Rs.42 for
children. Hence, 6 children earn Rs.42 in a day. So the daily
wage of a child should be Rs.7

18. Shyam went from Delhi to Shimla via Chandigarh by car.

The distance from Delhi to Chandigarh is 34 times the distance
from Chandigarh to Shimla. The average speed from Delhi

8
to Chandigarh was half as much again as that from
Chandigarh to Shimla. If the average speed for the entire
journey was 49 kmph. What was the average speed from
Chandigarh to Shimla?
(A) 39.2 kmph (B) 63 kmph
(C) 42 kmph (D) None of these
Ans: C
It is clear that the ratio of the distances between (Delhi-
Chandigarh): (Chandigarh-Shimla) = 3 : 4.
The ratio of the speeds between (Delhi-Chandigarh) :
(Chandigarh-Shimla) = 3 : 2.
Let the distances be 3x and 4x respectively and speeds be 3y
and 2y.
So the time taken will be  xy  and  2xy  respectively. Average
speed

 Total Dis tan ce 
7x  
7y
 49
 Total Time  x 2x  3
 y  y 

Hence, y = 21. So the average speed from

Chandigarh to Shimla = 2y = 42 kmph.

Area of ΔABE = 7 cm2
Area of rectangle ABEF = 14 cm2
Area of ABCD = 14 × 4 = 56 cm2

24. The owner of a local jewellery store hired three watchmen to

guard his diamonds, but a thief still got in and stole some
diamonds. On the way out, the thief met each watchman, one
at a time. To each he gave 12 of the diamonds he had then,
and 2 more besides. He escaped with one diamond. How
many did he steal originally?
(A) 40 (B) 36
(C) 25 (D) None of these
Ans: B
Since thief escaped with 1 diamond,
Before 3rd watchman he had (1+2)×2=6
Before 2nd watchman he had (6+2)×2=16
Before 1st watchman he had (16+2)×2=36

25. If x25y2z22y(2x z) , then which of the following

(x24y2 – 4yx) z2y2 – 2yz 0
(x – 2y)2(z – y)20
It can be true only if x=2y and z=y

26. A car rental agency has the following terms. If a car is rented
for 5 hr or less, then, the charge is Rs. 60 per hour or Rs. 12
per kilometre whichever is more. On the other hand, if the
car is rented for more than 5 hr, the charge is Rs. 50 per hour
or Rs. 7.50 per kilometre whichever is more. Akil rented a
car from this agency, drove it for 30 km and ended up
playing Rs. 300. For how many hours did he rent the car?
(A) 4 hr
(B) 5 hr
(C) 6 hr
(D) None of these
Ans: C
By trial and error:
30 × 12 = 360 > 300
30 × 7.5 = 225 < 300
50 × 6 = 300. Hence, he rented the car for 6 hr.

36. Convert the number 1982 from base 10 to base 12. The
result is
(A) 1182 (B) 1912
(C) 1192 (D) 1292
Ans: C

18
The answer is 1192.

37. For the product n(n + 1)(2n + 1), n  the

following is not necessarily true?
(A) It is even
(B) Divisible by 3
(C) Divisible by the sum of the square of first n natural
numbers.
(D) Never divisible by 237
Ans: D
Since n(n + 1) are two consecutive integers, one of them will
be even and thus their the product will always be even.
Also, sum of the squares of first ‘n’ natural numbers is given
by n n  162n  1
Hence, our product will always be divisible by this. Also you
will find that the product is always divisible by 3 (you can use
any value of n to verify this).
However, we can find that option (D) is not necessarily true.
E.g. If n = 118, (2n + 1) = 237 or if n = 236, then (n + 1) =
237 or if n itself is 237, etc.

38. The remainder obtained when a prime number greater than 6

is divided by 6 is
19
(A) 1 or 3 (B) 1 or 5
(C) 3 or 5 (D) 4 or 5
Ans: B
The best way to solve this question is by the method of
simulation. Choose any prime number greater than 6 and
verify the result. When 7 is divided by 6, it gives a remainder
1. So our answer could be (A) or (B). When 11 is divided by
6, it gives a remainder 5. Hence, our answer is (B).

39. AB ⊥BC, BD ⊥AC and CE bisects ∠C, ∠A = 30°. Then

43. A semi-circle is drawn with AB as its diameter. From C, a
point on AB, a line perpendicular to AB is drawn meeting
the circumference of the semi-circle at D. Given that AC = 2
cm and CD = 6 cm, the area of the semi-circle (in sq. cm)
will be:
(A) 32  (B) 50 
(C) 40.5  (D) 81 
Ans: B

ADB = 90° (Angle in semicircle)

CD2 = AC × CB
(6)2 = 2 × CB

number and is less than 300. The ratio of the number of
employees who are graduates and above, to that of
employees who are not, can possibly be:
(A) 101: 88 (B) 87: 100
(C) 110: 111 (D) 97: 84
Ans: D
23
Using options, the sum of the numerator and denominator of
the ratio should be a prime number. Only option (5) satisfies
[97 + 84 = 181]

45. Arun, Barun and Kiranmala start from the same place and
travel in the same direction at speeds of 30, 40 and 60 km
per hour respectively. Barun starts two hours after Arun. If
Barun and Kiranmala overtake Arun at the same instant,
how many hours after Arun did Kiranmala start?
(A) 3 (B) 3.5
(C) 4 (D) 4.5
Ans: C
Let us assume that Arun started running at 10 a.m. and Barun
started at 12 noon. So, in these two hours distance traveled by
Arun is 60 km and the relative speed of Barun w.r.t Arun is
60
10 km/hr. So Barun will overtake Arun after =  10  6 hours

So, Barun reaches there at 6 p.m.

So, Kiranmala also overtakes Arun at 6 p.m. Let us assume
Kiranmala takes 't' time to overtake Arun and the relative
speed of Kiranmala w.r.t Arun is 30 km/hr and Arun ran for 8
hrs. So, distance travelled by Arun is = 30 × 8 = 240 km while
distance travelled by Kiranmala=60t
240 = 6t t = 4
Hence, Kiranmala start running 4 hours after Arun had st off.

47. In figure ABCD is a parallelogram. Compute the values of x

and y.
(A) x = 7º and y = 6º
(B) x = 6º and y= 7º
(C) x = 6º and y= 6º
(D) None of these
Ans: B
Since ABCD is a parallelogram, AB || DC and AD || BC
Now, AB || DC and traversal BD intersects them.

25
 ABD = BDS
[ Alternate angles are equally]
 10x = 60º
 x = 60º

And, AD || BC and transversal BD intersects them.

 DBC = ADB
 4y = 28º
 y = 7º
 Hence, x = 6º and y= 7º

(C) x  27 (D) x = 10
Ans: A

26
x 1 x 1
We have,   
2 5 3 4

The denominators on two sides are 2,5,3, and 4. Their LCM

is 60.
Multiplying both sides of the given equation by 60, we get
 x 1  x 1
60      60   
2 5 3 4
x 1 x 1
 60   60   60   60 
2 5 3 4

 30x – 12 = 20x + 15
 30x – 20x = 15 + 12 [On transposing 20x to LHS and – 12
to RHS]
 10x = 27
 x  10
27
[On dividing both sides by 10]

is the solution of the given equation.

50. ABCD is rectangle with BAC = 32º. Determine DBC.

(A) 64 (B) 68
(C) 78 (D) 60
Ans: B
Suppose the diagonals AC and BD intersect at O.

Then, in OAB, we have

OA = OB [ Diagonals of rectangle are equal and they bisect
each other]
27
 OAB = OBA (Angles opposite to equalisides are
equal)
 BAC = DBA
 DBA = 32º
[ BAC = 32º(given)]
 ABC = 90º
 DBA + DBC = 90º
 32º + DBC = 90º
 DBC = 90º - 32º = 68º
