OVERVIEW
Science , Technology and Society (STS) is one of the new General Education courses in the
CHED education program. This module is based on outcome based education curriculum which will
help students develop their competencies and skills on communication, creativity, critical thinking and
problem solving. This Module has been prepared for the students taking up STS subject good for one
semester in the collegiate level.
This module present the general concepts and principles needed to study and understanding
of science, technology and society. Its is designed to enable students acknowledge and appreciate the
scientific and technological development from the perspective of it historical development up to 21th
century and its impact to the humans and its society.
This first part of the includes a review of the history of science and technology from the prehis-
toric era all the way to today’s advances in science and technology help them improves ways of life.
The historical survey is grounded on an understanding of basic science concepts and examine how the-
se development have affected the course of human society politically, economically, and socially.
The second part of the course focuses on current issues arising from the application of science
and Technology, and how it affects human beings, its environment, and society in general.
This module provides the student with the opportunity to read and learn more about science
and Technology considered in this study through lectures and activities.

Each lesson has the following elements:

A. Let's Think About It

This section serves as the hook. In activating prior knowledge, a lead question (essential
question) is presented. This is supported by pictures, links, quotes, news or trivia. The presenta-
tion is followed by a question/s that can process students' understanding, a real-world situation to
further guide the student in understanding the subject matter in the lesson.
B. Let's Explore on It

Formative activities are provided here through drills and exercises. The exercises and arranged
following Krathwol’s cognitive processes; remembering, understanding, analysing, evaluating, ap-
plying and creating. In this section, lower order thinking skills are followed-up.

C. Let’s Take-on the Challenge

The activities in this section challenge the higher order thinking skills of the students.
These challenge the students by evaluating and applying the science concepts learned in a real-
world situations.

D. Let's Learn by Doing

The learning principle, "Learning by Doing" is applied in this section. Supporting the
constructivism theory of allowing students to discover their own learning through creating/ de-
signing models is showcased here. This challenge is an indicator that transfer of learning takes

E. Let’s Treasure It

This serves as a brief summary of the concepts presented to facilitate easy recall and to
support better understanding of the students at the end of each lesson.

F. Let's Wonder on It

This section provides the opportunity for the students to realize the importance of the
concept and the integration of the good values for life-long learning.
