Psychology of Psychosocial Intervention:

Concepts and methodological foundations. Social
intervention models

Mg. Rafael Rodríguez Falla

CAPACITIES:

Make a situational diagnosis of the community to

intervene
MAIN MODELS, METHODS AND INTERVENTION
TECHNIQUES USED

• There are many theoretical and explanatory models in PC

but we will only briefly describe two of the most used.
• 1. Ecological model: puts the emphasis on the local context.
• Community services as interventions in a specific
community should contribute to the development of the
community.
• It is the evaluation of a natural scenario in order to redesign
the context that revolves around a social problem, so that a
community problem is altered as the environment that
contains it also changes.
MAIN MODELS, METHODS AND INTERVENTION
TECHNIQUES USED
–It offers the possibility of not focusing only on the effects but on
the systematic causes.
–Try to turn local circumstances and events into the important
objective of the psychologist's work.
–It is about identifying the talents and resources that are still
present in the community.
–Observing an ecologically significant community is looking at how
people interrelate, how their roles are managed.
–If we can see the community as a series of interrelated systems,
we have a better opportunity to design projects, systems and
services that approximate the needs of the community.
MAIN MODELS, METHODS AND INTERVENTION
TECHNIQUES USED

–The ecological perspective indicates that if we situate ourselves

within a social context, we are more likely to make an effort to solve
a social problem in the community, and not simply offer an
appropriate attitude with our professional skills.
–The psychologist must be able to leave his professional mold and
adhere to the feeling of many people and the resources they
possess.
–Providing psychological well-being means helping to develop the
natural resources of a community.
–Well-being does not represent the absence of disease but the
development and creation of resources within the community.
MAIN MODELS, METHODS AND INTERVENTION
TECHNIQUES USED

–For the ecological perspective, the criteria are oriented towards the
interrelations of human beings, towards resources, so that the
community develops, evolves and adapts to new influences.
–Perceive the community as a complex set of resources, in which
certain restrictions impede the development of the local community.
MAIN MODELS, METHODS AND INTERVENTION
TECHNIQUES USED

• 2. Model of social action: proposes that ideology,

conscience, communication and language are the
instruments through which the social definition is made
accessible to human beings incorporating subjectively as
consciousness.
– The processes of control and social deviation determine the social
activation, which will lead to a social change that implies a better
distribution of power.
– The intervention from this model implies:
– The active involvement of the participants
– The research takes place under natural and real conditions
MAIN MODELS, METHODS AND INTERVENTION
TECHNIQUES USED

• It is based on the theoretical framework expressed

• It contains a historical view of the phenomenon studied
• It must be responsible and socially useful in its possible
applications
• It tries to correspond to the participating subjects, while it is
possible, with information, results and useful ideas.
• Regardless of the model chosen to intervene in social
problems, the intervention must begin with a "needs
assessment" where at least the following issues should be
analyzed:
• The most important problems and needs of the community
MAIN MODELS, METHODS AND INTERVENTION
TECHNIQUES USED

–How the community reacts and is organized in front of them.

–Material and human resources available to the community to
organize and deal with their problems, whether formal or informal.
–Accessibility and quality of services
–What more help or services are needed.

Some tools that can be used are:

•The nominal groups
•Delphi panels
•The polls
MAIN MODELS, METHODS AND INTERVENTION
TECHNIQUES USED

• A "program evaluation" will always have to be

included in the design and implementation of a
community intervention program because it also
requires time, effort and planning.
• It is also what gives us information about the
objectives achieved in the short, medium and long
term.
