May Day Eve

Characters:

Agueda is a beautiful, young woman who is very curious about her future husband’s looks and Anastasia
is an old woman who was believed to be a witch because she has many superstitious beliefs. Badoy
Montiya is an arrogant and handsome man but merciless, and Dona Agueda is an emotional olday lady.
Dona Agueda’s daughter is a very curious girl about her mother’s past. Don Badoy Montiya is a special
admirer and regrets what he did to, Aguenda and Voltaire is the grandson of Agueda who is also very
curious of his future lover because he also believes in superstitious beliefs.

Setting:

The story took place in Intramuros, Manila. It happened on May Day Eve in a room with a mirror.

Conflict:

The conflict was Man versus Man. It started when Don Badoy Montoya’s grandson told him that his
wife, Dona Agueda, described him as a devil. As time passed by, he also told told the boy that his wife
was a witch.

Point of View:

The story was a third person point of view. The story was told from the perspective of a non-character.

Theme:

The theme that is present in May Day Eve is magic realism. The characters believed in superstitions
which made the wrong decision.

1. Exposition

- Anastasia told the young girls that they would see their future husband if they perform a chant in front
of the mirror. If it goes wrong, they would see an evil.

2. Complication

- When Agueda performed the chant in front of the mirror, she saw Don Badoy. She bit his hand because
he wouldn’t let go of her. At that time, he fell in love with her but he will not forget what she did to him.

3. Climax

- Don Badoy Montoya told his grandson, Voltaire, that he saw a witch when he tried to perform the
chant in front of the mirror. His grandson also mentioned that his grandmother also saw a devil while
performing the chant in front of the mirror.
4. Denouement

- Don Badoy realized that their relationship was wasted. He forgot his love for Agueda since that May
day eve. They had a bittersweet marriage.

5. Resolution

- Don Badoy looked back on the time he immediately fell in love with Agueda the time when he saw her
in the mirror while performing the chant. He forgot the feeling of the old love because it was replaced
by hatred, but it has now resurfaced but is too late because Agueda died.
