Instructions:
Read all instructions before starting
Fabrics & Seams:
Itis recommended that fabrics are 100 % cotton and pre-washed. All seam
allowances are 4"
We recommend pressing the seams flat towards one side (not open)
unless otherwise stated
Cutting Guide:
This pattern requires 180 (5" squares) in a variety of different prints,
(We suggest using 1 set of Patty Cakes 10 x 10)
White sashings: Cut 35 (12" x42") strips
Gut 3 of the strips into (1/-" x 38") strips
Cut 3 of the strips into (1%" x 39") strips.
Cut 22 of the strips into 4 (114" x 28%") strip and 4 (172" x 7") strip.
Cut each of the remaining 7 strips into 6(1%" x 7") strips
Binding: Cut 7 strips (2!2" x 42")
Total sashings:
3(1%4" x 38") strips.

Group your squares into 20 sets of nine and arrange them in three rows:
with three squares in each row. Smaller prints or tonal prints are best
used in the center square, or as the alternate squares that get cut in halt
Bigger prints are best used in the four corners. At the end of this pattern
we have included a table showing the fabric groupings we used to make
the twenty 9 patch blocks (The sample below is from group 12)
Stitch the equares together to form a traditional nine patch, by first
stitching them together into rows with three blocks in each row, then
stitching the rows together
Cut the completed 9 patch into four equal pieces by cutting through the
block vertically and horizontally. Cutting lines indicated by dotted line.
Repeat thie with the remainder of your basie nine patch blocke until they
are all stitched and cut into four 7" squares.

Separate your 80 (7” square) blocks into 4 goups, each with 20 blocks of
a variety of prints and layout
Experiment by arranging in various ways to create the desired layout. You
can use the finished picture of our quill as a guide. (Ensure that all blocks
are facing upright, and are not rotated.
Join the blocks together in rows of 4 blocks with a (1!:"x 7") white strip in
between each block. You should end up with 20 rows.

For each quarter of the quilt, join 5 rows together, with a (114" x 294
white strip between each row.

Add an extra (11" x 29%") white strip to the top and bottom of the two
bottom sections.

and attach another (1%" x 38") strip to each of the outside edges.
Join the two bottom sections together with a (1:" x 39") strip between
them and attach another (11" x 39") strip to each of the outside edges.

Cut batting and backing fabric 6" larger than quilt top.
On quilt top check all seams pressed and loose threads trimmed,
Pin or tape the backing layer right side down on a flat surface,
then add the batting layer on top. Lay quill top an batting layer
Fight side up and smooth out any wrinkles. Baste or pin the three
layers together in a 6” grid working out from the center,
Machine or hand quilt as desired.
Trim batting and backing even with the quilt to
Binding: Cut 7(2%" x 42") strips. Join the 7(2°5" x 42") strips and
press the seams open. Fold the binding in half lengthwise wrong
sides together and press it gently.
Leaving a four inch tail of fabric, begin slitching the binding
halfway along one side of the quilt top.
‘Align the raw edges of the binding and the quilt top, stitch
binding with a ‘s" seam, Stiteh to 7" from corner of quill and
backstitch, Fold binding up to create a 45° angle then fold it
down at 90°. Stitch trom top edge to 14" from next corner and
repeat process till 8" from the start. Join the ends to fit and finigh
attaching binding. Fold the binding to the back of the quilt and
hand stitch it down,
