Much – багато, безліч, немало, велика кільсть


Many – дуже, чимало, багато.

-This words are used when there is a large quantity of something. They are used
in negative sentences and questions.

Exmp:
‘How many umbrellas can you see?’
‘Too many to count.’
‘How much sand can you see?’
‘Not much.’

Many is used with countable nouns.


• I don’t have many CD’s at home.
(Negative sentence and CD is countable – you can say one CD, two CDs, etc)
• How many brothers and sisters do you have?
(Question and brothers and sisters is countable)
Much is used with uncountable nouns.
• Is there much milk in the fridge?
(Question and milk is uncountable – you can’t say one milk, two milks, etc)
• They don’t have much money to buy food this week.
(Negative sentence and money is uncountable)
For positive sentences we use a lot of. It is used with countable and uncountable
nouns.
• I have much money. WRONG
(The sentence is positive so we can’t use much)
• I have a lot of money. CORRECT
• There are a lot of snakes in Asia. CORRECT
(Snakes is countable, and the sentence is positive)
• I have a lot of time to help you. CORRECT
(Time is uncountable, and the sentence is positive)
• So you may ask me, what is the difference?
-We use much with singular uncountable nouns and many with plural nouns:

I haven’t got much change. I’ve only got a ten euro note.

Remember: Much and many for negative sentences and questions. A lot of for positive sentences.
