Within a series of beats, some may be stressed, thus organizing the beats into groups (meter)
Known: The students have clapped other pieces of music’s rhythm before
Objective: the students will learn how to not only clap the rhythm but clap the strong beats in
Students will learn how to sing Mr. Frog went A- Courtin in a round and also keep in time with
Materials Needed: Song: Mr. Frog Went A-Courtin’, concept worksheet of frogs,
Procedure:
C. Have them clap along with you the rhythm of the melody Enactive
D. Give them the supplement sheets and have them first clap the rhythm while singing the
song, do this a few times so they have it stuck in their heads Iconic Representation
E. Next, have them only clap when they get to the bigger frogs, the strong, stressed beats in
cut time, this might take some time to get Enactive and Iconic
F. Next split the class up in two, have one clap the rhythm of the song, and the other group
clap the beat, do this a few times, then have the group switch positions and repeat
G. Next change the tempo twice, one slow and one fast, Ask the students to find the big
H. Next, try to do a round with the song, split the students up again, this time have one
group start then when the sing “Um Hm” have the next group start and make that a round.
Model keeping a steady beat throughout the song no matter voice that comes in it should
I. Ask what other movements could work with this song, listen and follow through with a
student’s idea and sing the song in a round again with the new movement. Creative

J. Try all together with keeping a consistent tempo and beat in cut time
Closure: Great job everyone! Sing to your parents what you learned today, and you can
apply clapping to not just the rhythm of the song, but the beat to any song.
